Eurovision is celebrating its 69th year as it returns to Basel, Switzerland where the 26 remaining countries will be competing to take home the win.

For Norway, they currently have three victories under their belt in 1985, 1995 and 2009. They have finished last in twelve Eurovision finals, of which four times with “null points”

In 2024, Norway was represented with the song Ulveham performed by Gåte where they finished in last place with a total of 16 points.

Representing Norway this year is Kyle Alessandro. The 19-year-old singer is the youngest contestant in this year’s Eurovision, and he first found fame in the casting show Norske Talenter, the Norwegian version of Got Talent at the age of ten.

After appearing on various TV show, he released several singles and his debut studio album Første kapittel.

In 2023 during the Norwegian preliminary round for Eurovision, Melodi Grand Prix, he participated with Kristian Haugstøyl and Magnus Winjum as part of the collective project Umami Tsunami. However, they finished in last place.

He applied again in 2025 as a solo artist and won, meaning he qualified to represent Norway.

When asked if Eurovision is his biggest dream, Kyle shared: “My family recalls these stories of little me, in front of the TV and pointing into it whenever it was Eurovision time.”

Kyle will be singing the English-language song Lighter at Eurovision. The song has a poignant meaning for Kyle, and was inspired by his mother, who told him after her cancer diagnosis that he should never lose his light.

The song is about fighting back after a setback and finding hope in difficult times.

Unfortunately for the singer, Norway isn’t one of the current favourites to win according to Ladbrokes with the odds at 200/1.

The lyrics for Lighter

“Golden girl dressed in iceA heart as dark as nightYou got me to dim my light, no moreI really think I bought your liesDid anything to keep you mineYou kept me hooked on your line, no more

Somewhere along the way I lost my mindI had to walk a hundred thousand milesI’m not afraid to set it all on fireI won’t fall againI’ll be my own lighter

Nothing can burn me nowI’ll be my own lighterI feel a spark inside meI don’t need savingNo way, no way’Cause I’m my ownI’m my own lighter

I’m tired of a million tries to fight, the signsAnd when everybody tried to tell meI should’ve known that it was time to break freeYour reigns that kept me at your mercyI’ll burn them to the groundNo more, no moreIgnite the fire

Silence fills the roomAnd I’ve taken off my jewelsI wish none of this was trueBut there’s a fire growing too

Nothing can burn me nowI’ll be my own lighterI feel a spark inside meI don’t need savingNo way, no way’Cauѕe I’m my ownI’m my own lighter

Nothing can burn me downI’m my ownI’m my own lighter”

Eurovision Grand Final airs on Saturday 17th May at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
