Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie recently appeared on an episode of Cressida Bonas’s “Lessons from Our Mothers” podcast, where they spoke about mom Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.

Bonas, interestingly, is an ex-girlfriend of Beatrice and Eugenie’s cousin Prince Harry.

In the episode, they shared a relatable sister fight that the Duchess of York jumped in to break up—and it’ll make any 1990s kid smile.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are best friends now, but, like any pair of sisters, had a fight or two in their younger years.

The daughters of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York opened up on one particularly rough spat while appearing on “Lessons from Our Mothers,” the podcast hosted by Cressida Bonas—who also happens to be their cousin Prince Harry’s ex-girlfriend. The fight was so big, it turns out, that their mother Ferguson had to step in to mend fences over one of their “silly childhood fights.”

The fight, as any 1990s kid can relate to, involved a pair of pink Converse sneakers, per Hello!. A “big fight” ensued over who the sneakers belonged to, and Ferguson had to jump in and mediate.

“It was a big one,” Beatrice said on the show. “And mum just jumped into that fight and was like, ‘Come on, you can do it!’ The forced collaboration you’re slightly annoyed about because she’s pushing on a bit of a nerve, but the forced collaboration and that joy of the making up at the end was a big part of what she instilled in us.”

“This sense that it’s okay to feel, it’s okay to push on those emotions, but you have to figure out what the resolution looks like as well,” Beatrice continued. “So she was very resolution-driven.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Eugenie spoke about her mother, remembering when Ferguson “moved into hospital” with her during her scoliosis operation: “I had scoliosis when I was younger,” Eugenie said. “I have scoliosis, and I had a big operation when I was 12. My mum basically moved into the hospital with me and was there every waking hour. If I was ever in pain, she was right by my bedside.”

Referring to the scar she later displayed prominently and proudly through her 2018 wedding dress, Eugenie added, “As a 12-year-old little girl, I had a big scar halfway down my back and I was terrified of it. I was ashamed. I didn’t know what it was—I was so young. And she used to be so proud of me and my scar and what I’d been through that if people were ever talking about it, she would turn me around and she would show them my scar.”

The three women, of course all now adults and all now mothers, are extremely close, and Beatrice and Eugenie returned the favor from their youth and supported Ferguson as she battled back-to-back diagnoses of skin and breast cancer.

Of her daughters, Ferguson said, “They support me through thick and thin, not least my recent illness. We call each other ‘The Tripod’ because we prop each other up, come what may.”
