Business that constantly closes down due to downturn in business/high rents and rates/can’t get staff offers employment to refugees.

Of course it’s spun as an altruistic enterprise, but I can’t help but think there’ll be a “Don’t like it, you know where you can go” attitude.

I really hope I’m wrong.

  1. These people are going to be emotionally very fragile. I think the pace and nature of these types of jobs might be too much. I dunno though they might want distraction

  2. The only reason the country has opened the door to Ukrainian’s, several times in excess of our EU quota, is expressly for the opportunity of cheap labour.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is gullible as fuck.

  3. I’m not sure if this is still the case, but Bewleys *was* owned by Quakers – basically the people who invented compassionate business and actually cared about the welfare of their workers.

  4. Sounds like more of the same virtue signalling types from corporations amd companies

Hiring refugees and being extremely vocal about it is the new slap a rainbow flag on it.

Probably pay them poverty wages since they know the refugees have no expenses ie rent, healthcare etc

  5. It’s a dream come true for employers. Thousands of desperate workers who will do just about anything and don’t even know their rights. So you can be sure we will see a lot of exploitation

  6. People from poorer countries are often prepared to work for less and government policy is to import as many as we can to resolve the pension and birth rate crisis.

  7. Even if it is cyclical who cares? Surely it’s good for refugees. Bashing all these initiatives will stop employers from offering them. Employers need the humblebrag – so let’s tolerate if it means getting refugees employed.

  8. It’s pretty wild on the Facebook pages that are supposedly helping Ukrainians find their feet with the job offers. I get the people need and want jobs, but some of it does read like it’s an answer to all the prayers of shitty employers who can’t get staff. Even worse when accommodation is tied up in the offer. Hope it works out for many but I share your cynicism.

  9. Just to say on this. Remember who the true problem makers are. The corrupt politicians and their doners/corporate cronies. Cause in about 10 years time these same politicians will pump the populace full of hatred and bigotry against these very refugees cause they will make them the scape goat for a lack of housing, ridiculous rents and worsened working conditions for labor. And if history is any evidence a lot of the populace will fall for this nonsense (hell, there are people already here blaming the housing crisis on those damm foreigners). Class war as it has always been.

  10. I think it was TG4 news the other day that had a piece on refugees arriving in Connemara and they got some quotes from some local people including a manager of the hotel in Clifden of Golfgate fame who basically said they were delighted to see them arrive especially if they wanted to work… over 100 years later and there are many in this country still fumbling in the greasy till.

  11. Going on long before the war in Ukraine I dated a Philipina girl who was here illegally and worked in the Europe hotel in Killarney for … 4 euro an hour, there is a legal Philipino manager there and all sorts of illegality going on

  12. theres lots of businesses doing this. Its not altruism. Its to help themselves pure and simple.

The businesses are taking advantage of the situation.
