VRT at it again, because imagine mentioning ‘Walloon’ in a positive light.

  1. It’s even worse in this previous article about the Queen Elisabeth Competition: [https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2025/04/19/valere-burnon-portret-piano-koningin-elisabethwedstrijd/](https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2025/04/19/valere-burnon-portret-piano-koningin-elisabethwedstrijd/)

“2 Belgen komen in actie in de eerste ronde van de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd voor piano en allebei zijn ze 26 jaar. Naast de Vlaming Roeland Vermeulen is er ook Valère Burnon uit Marche-en-Famenne in de Ardennen.”

Like are they allergic to the word ‘Waal’?

  2. Vlaming die iets goed doet = Vlaming

Waal die iets slecht doet = Waal

Waal die iets goed doet = Belg

Erger me al jaren aan het verdoken Vlaams-nationalisme van de VRT.

  3. Don’t blame VRT, blame N-VA that cuts subsidies if VRT isn’t Flemish-nationalist enough.

  4. The majority of the members of the vrt board of directors are nva/vb members. The head of the board even voted against gay marriage back in the day

  5. Stop being angry about it. It’s a very normal thing and not just VRT.

If your neighbour does something noteworthy you’ll also say it’s your neighbour, not “a Flemmish guy”
One always pick the lowest common origin to compare people, because that lowest common origin is something to be proud of.
If it was someone else in your city, (instead of your neighbor) you’d reference him by your city. Came of province…
For a Walloon, the lowest common beteeen them and a VRT reader is “a Belgian”.
If it were a Dutch person, you’d say someone from “Benelux”. If it’s a German, and you’re talking to an American, you’ll say “European”….

Stop thinking this is because we don’t like them, it’s because of shared pride.

Concrete example: say a flemmish guy wins the tour the France.
    – His neigbours will say “my neighbour” won.
    – people from the same city will say “someone from our city won”
    – people from the same province will say “someone from our province won”
    – other Flemish people will say “a Flemish guy won”
    – walloons will say “a Belgian won”
    – Dutch people will say “a Belgian won” if they’re talking to other Dutchies, but will say “an European won” when talking to Americans…

  6. I really don’t get why this sub makes this a big deal so often when all other regional broadcasters in the world do this too.

If the news website from my hometown Geraardsbergen makes an article about someone from the city, it’s going to mention that in the title. If they’re from somewhere else, they’ll just say they’re a Belgian.

You really think if the Catalan regional broadcaster makes an article about someone from Catalonia they’re going to not going to call them Catalan? And when it’s about someone from somewhere else in Spain, they’re obviously just going to refer to them as ‘Spanish’.

It’s pretty ironic that you want our media to divide the country even more by not simply calling Walloons ‘Belgians’ like they’re one of us, but you actively want the VRT to refer to them as ‘Walloon’ which immediately gives the Flemish reader the idea that they’re not ‘one of us’, when they obviously are.

  7. I grew uo with Walloon media, they do the exact same. You make this way bigger than it is.

  8. It’s hard to paint an entire region as a burden if its citizens do good things in the news.

Works for Brussels too, as well as people of African descent. Their ethnicity only get mentioned if they did something bad.

  9. It seems this thread brought out a lot of azijnpissers who seem to accuse the VRT of the weirdest shit. This says a lot more about them and their farfetched leftist viewpoints than the actual VRT.

OP is imagining things and attributing malicious intent to the VRT where this is not the case. The adverb: “Every accusation is a confession”. Is it possible that OP holds some kind of grudge against the VRT? Perhaps he is actively on the lookout for reasons to validate his negative feelings towards the publieke omroep?

This gif and this post almost look the same.
