Irish speakers are leaving Gaeltacht areas due to problems with planning and a lack of housing

  1. I stay in a gaeltact area several times a year. A big factor is the lack of jobs. One way to make money is that locals who inherit a home then rent them out as holiday lets as a means to get income. So banning rentals will have a big effect on the local economy.

  2. The Gaeltacht I live in has become an AirBnB park. Its a great spot if you’re a tourist, not so much if you’re trying to put down roots.

We’re not allowed to have any issues with it without getting shouted at about how it brings money into the community.

I’ll be moving to Derry in July. Most of my mates already have.

  3. Glad to see the truth in this thread – the gaeltachts have been destroyed by the locals themselves and their addiction to Airbnb and other forms of short-term rentals. They don’t care that there could be new communities of remote workers coming in and glad to speak Irish.

  4. What annoys me about this is that it’s all focused on one off housing. They should be building clusters of small villages and towns rather than continuous one off sprawl. Look at Gweedore or Spiddal on Google Maps, both of them just look like huge American style suburbia sprawling for miles. It’s mental. Service provision for this type of development is expensive (on you, taxpayer) and pollution from septic tanks is terrible. And of course it means the only way of getting around is by car.

  5. Need to stop building one off houses in the middle of nowhere for a start but often there’s a stupid amount of empty summer homes too

  6. Government should be mandating that any local from the Gaeltacht that has a job in Dublin that can be worked from home, should be granted permission to work from home provided they live in the Gaeltacht. Would soon fix any economy issues and I would move back in a heartbeat.

  7. The areas need community-developed housing projects for permanent residents, not paper plans, to fulfill their own demand. Local government is not, and never has been, up to the job.
