New Liberal leader Sussan Ley says smaller taxes, better schools and national security will be central to her vision to rebuild her devastated party, as internal debate grows over dumping net zero commitments.
In an opinion piece today, Ley said that support for the AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine pact with the US, and an Australian education system based “on critical thinking” will remain tenets of the Liberal Party (The Australian).
She added that the party under her leadership would “always stand for lower, simpler and fairer taxes”.
The opposition leader said that while her party is debating a new course on climate change and net zero, she does not consider the differing opinions of her MPs a weakness.
Former MPs, however, warn that Ley’s hopes to lead from the centre will be crushed by elements in the party room “where nothing even remotely sensible or centrist” is mulling around right now (The Saturday Paper).
