The Latvian national team still has two games left in the World Championship group stage: on Sunday against Slovakia and on Tuesday against Austria. Wins are essential in both games to ensure progress in the tournament rather than a ticket home.
The top four teams in the two eight-team groups progress to the quarter-finals. As things stand, Slovakia are fourth in Group A with 7 points, Latvia are fifth with 6 points and Austria are sixth with five points.
A win for Slovakia would make it impossible for Latvia to overtake them, even with a victory against Austria.
In Latvia’s favour, they do at least only have to play their direct rivals in the last two games, not the more powerful group teams, so their fate is completely in their own hands.
Coverage of Sunday’s game will be available on LTV7 and here on LSM. Pre-match build-up starts at 20:30 with the actual game starting at 21:20 Rīga time.
