Looks like we're going ahead, despite US hissy fits.

Australian authorities have begun loading the first of the 49 decommissioned Ukraine-bound Abrams tanks onto a cargo ship despite continued private objections from U.S. officials, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported on May 19.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the upcoming delivery of the tanks when meeting President Volodymyr Zelensky in Rome on May 18. The exact date of their arrival is withheld for security reasons, ABC reported.

  1. That means Australia is sending 50% more Abrams than the US sent.

  2. I’m confused… Please tell me
If I have this right: the American Government said yes to the transfer, so Australia is transferring them, but some American officials are still complaining?

  3. Not to downplay our contribution here (I was in one of our Abrams last year and that thing is a beast!), and I’m very glad the US is finally letting us ship them to Ukraine, so good news.

But are past the point where more MBTs are going to make a big difference? 49 Abrams would make a pretty pointy spear tip for any offensive, but I’m not sure now how likely that is and/or effective given the extent of the fortifications, drone activity and state of the war…..

Anyway, sure beats letting them sit and rust in Townsville I guess

  4. I suppose the Australians had to put their tanks in a suit and say thank you, before they were allowed to be given away…

  5. 49 Abrams. A little late but really welcome. 🤗

  6. Better to give them to Ukraine instead of keeping them to rot, the US should give them all instead of hindering the supply to Ukraine, for sure the soldiers prefer to stay inside a tank instead of being bombed on foot in the trenches by drones without even having some support tanks in the rear. More than anything, it would be a nice positive injection for the soldiers’ morale.
