The Science Mill presents “Mysteries of Science” on Memorial Day weekend, May 24-26. Young detectives can explore the enigmas of the natural world through hands-on activities from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sunday, and Monday at the Johnson City STEM museum, 101 S. Lady Bird Lane.

Topics cover glaciology, biology, chemistry, forensics, math, and astronomy. Activities include:

Bleeding Glacier—Become a polar explorer to uncover the mysteries of Antarctica’s Blood Falls. Examine facts and observe samples under the microscope, recording observations in a detective’s notebook, then use the data to solve the “mystery” of the “bleeding” glacier.

Fingerprint Detectives—Someone has walked away with a banana from the Science Mill’s Banana Piano, leaving behind a peel and fingerprints. Study the clues to catch the Banana Bandit.

Journey Through Space & Numbers—A black hole has mysteriously appeared at the Science Mill, pulling everything into it. To escape its gravitational pull, measure your surroundings and collect mathematical clues hidden along the path.

On Monday only, special guest forensic anthropologist Sophia R. Mavroudas, Ph.D., will be at the Science Mill. Dr. Mavroudes specializes in bone biology, forensic anthropology, and humanitarian forensics. She will share her work on conducting skeletal recoveries around the world and using the microstructure of bone changes to estimate age-at-death and uncover other facts.

All “Mysteries of Science” activities are included with general admission. Purchase tickets in advance and find a full schedule of activities at sciencemill.org.
