World War II Online is one of those games that just keeps on keeping on, staying online for over two decades now, and soon there will be another upcoming major adjustment, as capturing mechanics for the MMOFPS are finally getting some updates.
“It has been a lifetime it feels like since any attention was paid to it, other than modifying capture timers to help offset population imbalances and give the underdogs a fighting chance,” developer Cornered Rat Software admits. “That is, until now.”
The game’s next update will introduce a new tug-of-war mechanic for capture points, as defenders can now contest or halt capturing so long as there is an equal number of defenders as well as attackers. Otherwise, capture will progress based on whether there are more attackers or defenders at a point, and capture speed will also take population imbalance into account, granting faster speed for those on a less populated side of the fight.
This adjustment is part of the game’s wider 2025 roadmap, which also includes plans for balancing, tank visuals, and a month-long promotion of its all-access subscription plan. That attempt to entice new players appears to have already begun with a new “impact” trailer that talks up the shooter’s massive warfront across land, sea, and air, its gameplay over graphics creed, and highly detailed simulation of things like vehicles, armor, and ballistics.
