  1. Come on. Russia has been advancing almost without any respite, besides the ceasefires, across the entire front. Ukraine was ousted from Belgorod with horrific, pointless casualties. Their latest incursion was stonewalled at the border. They declared Pokrovsk a victory while the Russians continue to form a cauldron around it from both sides. Myrnohrad and Kostiantynivka are under increasing threats and look like the next likely targets of Russia’s summer offensive.

This is not to say Russia has achieved a total victory or Ukraine is on the brink. But “Russia is losing to Ukraine”? That just insults even the casual observer’s intelligence.

  2. The issue is sustainability. Putin wants to lock in maximal advances on the map before his military turns into a pumpkin coach and the balloon proceeds to deflate. In “negotiations,” this is called *fait accompli.* Putin wants terms he can subsequently point to later that “validate” his theft of sovereign Ukrainian territory and the kidnapping of its citizens.

What Putin doesn’t want tested is his capacity to hold onto the furthest extend of his advance under duress. That’s what will happen if the war continues. For all the Kremlin’s bluster and those willing to sell and amplify its snake oil, its “strength” is a constructed illusion.

  3. Summary:

    May 19, 2025
Putin’s Generals “Lying to Him as Russia Falters in Ukraine”

Ahead of today’s Trump-Putin call, Western intelligence suggests Putin is being misled by his generals, who report inflated battlefield success. Believing he can retake Ukrainian regions by year’s end, Putin is unaware his forces are suffering significant losses and making only minimal territorial gains.

Reports indicate his hardline stance in negotiations stems from these overly optimistic assessments. In reality, Russia has failed to meet strategic objectives, with about one million casualties since the invasion began. Ukraine’s drone capabilities and increased domestic arms production have eroded Russia’s artillery advantage, now down from 15:1 to under 2:1.

Despite Russia’s declining oil revenue and an economy straining under war, Putin continues to demand “completely unreasonable” terms to end hostilities. His detachment from battlefield realities may inadvertently benefit Ukraine.

Western nations aim to further cut Kremlin energy revenues, while inflation tops 10% in Russia. Nonetheless, Putin presses on—Saturday saw the most intense drone attack since 2022, with 273 drones launched.

Ukrainian President Zelensky, attending Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration, met with U.S. Vice President JD Vance as concern grows over Putin’s next move

  4. Some posters here keep running the narrative of “the win / loss war”.

It can’t be that way. If Russia loses, realistically nothing happens but that Ukraine get Russia out of their territory and be made to pay reparations for the destruction and mass murder of Ukrainian people.

If Ukraine loses, they cease to exist. Russia hates Ukraine and would have no problem flattening every city and killing every Ukrainian.

The comparisons are light years apart. The silly, stupid, ignorant and possibly narcissistic commenters saying that Ukraine should just stop here, like really do you think they have any real choice????

Ukraine want to live peacefully in their sovereign territory, Russia wants to destroy them and make Ukraine into New Russia.

How can the negative people who keep saying that Ukraine should ‘give up, give Russia what they want, end the war, stop killing your people’ look at themselves in the mirror each day????

Ukrainians are giving their lives for their language, history and their future. There is no future for Ukraine if they kowtow to Russia like the US have done.

Russia don’t negotiate, they just demand, bully and flat out lie.

    Slava Ukraini

  5. That was already the reason for the 2022 invasion, likely already for the start of the war.

  6. > he has no idea his forces are losing

“Losing” is an overly optimistic characterisation here in my opinion.

I’d go for something along the lines of “incapable of achieving the maximalist goals set out for them” or “fail to make any meaningful progress towards their objectives”.

  7. I think it’s more likely that Putin is fully aware of what’s happening and just doesn’t care

  8. Unfortunately @potus is also listening to Russian generals.
