Experts break down energy aggregation, what you should know

Experts break down energy aggregation, what you should know

  • 20.05.2025

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Tri-State energy customers are receiving letters about energy aggregation, known as Dynegy, a company that can supply electricity and natural gas.

Kathy Belzer with Midwest Utility Consultants says that aggregation changes who supplies energy and the rate they charge for that supply.

In Cincinnati, that means residents would receive a Duke Energy Bill with two charges: a fixed generation charge from Duke Energy, and a supply charge from a company like Dynegy.

“If you used 2,000 units of electric, they’re going to take that 2,000 and multiply it by that fixed rate and that’s going to be your cost,” Belzer told FOX19 NOW.

For Dynegy, customers are automatically enrolled unless they opt out. If they’ve received the letter, they’ll see the supply charges on their next bill.

Those who do opt-out will likely still have a supply charge from Duke Energy at Duke Energy’s rate, she said.

“So many comments on social media are saying, ‘Oh, I’m not doing this, I’m staying with Duke,’ and it’s ill advised,” Belzer said.

She explained that rushing to make a choice like that means people are not considering what the best rate might be.

The website Energy Choice Ohio lets people compare rates directly.

Belzer said residents should check the rate the letter says they’re being offered and check the rate they’d be getting if they opted out.

She explained that people can opt-out at anytime with no penalty.
