Switzerland faces Kazakhstan on Tuesday with a chance at winning Group B at the IIHF World Championship.

Switzerland (5-0-1, 16 points) enters its final game in Group B at the 2025 IIHF World Championship with a path to finishing first, but it will need help after it plays Kazakhstan (1-5-0, 3 points) on Tuesday at Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning, Denmark. The Swiss need a regulation victory and at worst an overtime loss by Czechia in its final game against the United States or an overtime/shootout win and a Czechia regulation loss. The stakes are starkly different for Kazakhstan, which needs to get to overtime to avoid relegation to Division IA in 2026.

The lone blemish for the Swiss in the tournament is an overtime loss to Czechia in its opener on May 9. Switzerland pummeled Hungary 10-0 on Sunday, with Leonard Genoni (EV Zug, Switzerland) needing just six saves to post the shutout. Andres Ambühl (Davos, Switzerland) notched a hat trick in the win, while Timo Meier (New Jersey Devils) had two goals and two assists and Dominik Egli (Frölunda, Sweden) also scored twice. Sven Andrighetto (ZSC Lions, Switzerland) leads the team with six goals, while Tyler Moy (Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, Switzerland) has a team-best nine points. Genoni has a 1.48 goals-against average and .925 save percentage in four games.

Kazakhstan also played on Sunday, taking a 6-1 loss to the United States. The Kazakhs avoided a shutout when Vladimir Volkov (Arlan Kokshetau, Kazahkstan) netted a shorthanded goal with 50 seconds remaining. The team has been outscored 28-8 in the tournament. Nikita Mikhailis (Metallurg Magnitogorsk, Russia) tops the team with three goals and four points, while Maxim Pavlenko (Ryazan, Russia) comes into the game with a 3.68 GAA and .876 save percentage in six games.

The Swiss have never won the gold at the Worlds, claiming their fourth silver medal in the competition in 2024 in Czechia. Kazakhstan’s best finish at the World Championship was a 10th-place mark in 2021.
