Rishi Sunak blocked increase of energy bill rebate from £200 to £500 ‘or more’, leak shows

  1. This doesn’t surprise me one bit, and I’m not 100% sure how I feel about this. On one hand, people need help, but the other? Well this forced loan-not-loan is a bit of a shite way to do it.

I assume the energy companies aren’t going to be rushing to reduce their prices as we head into the repayment period, so it’s yet more money people will have to find each month. If my bank account wasn’t as stretched as it is, I’d put money on there not being any support for people who were already stretched financially over the repayment period – the government couldn’t bear to sustain a £20 uplift to UC, or even worse, apply that to anyone on legacy benefits in the first place. They’re not going to help anyone through the repayment period, so a larger loan-not-loan could end up being catastrophic in the long run for some people.

  2. > rebate

    It’s not a rebate.

It’s a forced loan which people will have to pay back even if they didn’t take it out in the first place.

  3. Of course, can’t have the peasents try to borrow their way to survival. They must work 20 different jobs and get by on no sleep and live on gruel. /s

  4. Who would work in the Boris Johnson gang the bodies going under buses are mounting up Boris would sacrifice God on the alter of King Murdoch to save himself.

  5. Not a Sunak fan. But looks like others in government and Tory party are not fans. The whispers on him are coming in drip feeds. The question is: who wins with Sunak in the back burner?

  6. HE’S SUCH A TOSSER REMBER WHO FUCKED US OVER WHEN IT’S THE ELECTION THESE PRICKS NEED TO BE VOTED OUT

  7. Oi Sunak stick your fucking rebate up your nose, I don’t want it, I don’t need it and you’ve forgotten the basic concept of choice. Give it to me that equates to large amounts of vodka so I’ll have one hell of a party. Alternatively I could come and see you and return it all in pennies. I just want the choice to reject or accept it. Choice underpins our society yet you just ride roughshod over us to make yourself look like the saviour of the economy, the very economy that your party screwed up.

  8. Firstly this isnt a loan or a rebate, a rebate would mean the public would be getting money back, secondly a loan would mean only people that were given the money would have to pay it back.

On the first point, it’s the *energy firms* that will be getting the rebate when we pay back the money over the next five bills (£40 a bill).

On the second point please read the following scenario :

Two children lived with their parents.
The bill for that house got the £200 off their bill and the money will be paid back by adding £40 to the next five bills.

A couple of months after that bill, the children move out in to separate properties.

The next bill arrives for the parents property and the first bill arrives for the children’s properties.

ALL THREE of those bills will have the £40 charge, even though the children never benefited from the initial £200 off.

So £600 ends up being paid back over three households for a £200 discount on one households bill.

    It’s a fucking scam.

But imaging if it was £500 or more, that would be £1500 being paid back at least.

THIS WHOLE THING IS A SCAM.

  9. Everyone: it’s not a rebate, it’s a loan!

    Tories: it’s not a loan, it’s a levy

As if calling it a levy makes it better. We’re still out of pockets while oil companies make record profits..
