In May 1944, Soviet authorities deported the entire nation of the Crimean Tatars, the indigenous people of Crimea. This horrific event became a symbol of Russia’s century-long attempts to justify its colonial control over a region it had no historical right to. As a result, at least 200,000 Crimean Tatars were sent to remote parts of the Soviet Union and with no right to return until Ukraine’s independence in 1991.
In this post, we examine this tragedy behind the false narrative of “Russian Crimea” that the Kremlin uses to justify its 2014 annexation and a decade-long invasion of Ukraine.
