Don’t tell me – ‘otherwise we can’t afford to finish the project’ or similar? Fuckers.
So the developer fucked up, and now once again…the public has to eat the consequences.
We’re so dependent on business in London we can’t even make them accountable, we can’t upset private corporate businesses or disrupt their profits or they just fuck off. It’s so boring.
Cancel all affordable housing. It’s a complete waste of effort and money. Just build houses of any kind and every one at every affordability level will benefit.
Imagine using a threat to stop finishing the project to get what they want. You shouldn’t be able to back out of the obligations agreed to and not to mention how often this happens with these “viability assessments”.
Not to.mention they expect at least £525m of pre-tax profit in FY25. It’s good business planning to have money available to cover any poor planning like this.
What’s more surprising is this same group, tried to take the council housing nearby and force people out, just because they wanted to make more money. I’m glad they didn’t, because I genuinely expected them to pull this kind of stunt.
Sure. And then blame the immigrants for lack of affordable housing.
Classic playbook.
It’s mightily hard to build anything in London right now. You have to deliver 2 staircases which take up a lot of space (and cost) but generate zero revenue. Michael Gove left us with the broken Building Safety Regulator which is adding 12-18 months delays to developments (and tons of additional costs. And to boot, interest rates are much higher so it’s difficult to get financing.
Standard practice for developers, aided by their chums the unelected planning officers who have more power than the elected councillors and have them over a barrel. And are protected by a powerful trade union. And they know councils cannot afford to pay for expensive lawyers to fight appeals.
Sounds too good to be true. There will be a catch somewhere, read the fine print….
“Put simply, there is a housing crisis in Camden and this can only be resolved by [the] delivery of more homes quickly. Completion of more homes serving *any* part of the market will… benefit households at every level of the market, from those wanting the highest cost homes to those needing the most affordable homes.”
Put these f**kers in the bin.
“St George argues that without making those changes, the project’s viability would be threatened and it would need to be “paused” – delaying the delivery of any type of housing on the site.”
Make them forfeit the site for not finishing it.. then turn the whole lot into Council owned housing
