The Migros or Coop debate is something I find super interesting, and I noticed that people from abroad also quickly learn this fun quirk. I never took it seriously, but I recently learned that the “Ich bin ein Aldikind” campaign began with an interview in my area; when asked if she was a Migros or Coop kid, a teenager replied, “Actually, I’m an Aldi kid.”

So, I guess for a bit of nostalgia; I explored the data of supermarkets in Switzerland.
And I love maps, I realized you like them too, so some findings:

  • Well I was surprised how many more Migros we have than Coop.
  • Volg is a Monopoly 355 stores without immediate competition
  • There is a Coop in a town with 53 people. 18.2 Stores per 1000 Inhabitants. It's also the smallest Coop in Switzerland. 4.7 Rating on Google Maps. It's in Bosco Gurin, and I think an interesting alternative Tourist Attraction.
  • Aldi Zip Codes have on average CHF 4000 more annual Income.
  • The lowest population dense Cantons and zips have the highest number of stores.
  • Landi is everywhere but it's never alone.
  • Denner dominates the Romandie
  • Aldi and Lidl are nearly always together, but there are a few "outliers" that have 2 Lidl's or 2 Aldis nearby.

I thought the densities are worth sharing, because these are super counter intuitive:

  1. Graubünden – 6.7
  2. Thurgau – 5.5
  3. Glarus – 5.2
  4. Uri – 5.1
  5. Appenzell Innerrhoden – 4.9
  6. Nidwalden – 4.9
  7. Schaffhausen – 4.8
  8. St. Gallen – 4.6
  9. Schwyz – 4.5
  10. Solothurn – 4.3
  11. Luzern – 4.3
  12. Aargau – 4.3
  13. Appenzell Ausserrhoden – 4.3
  14. Bern – 4.2
  15. Tessin – 4.1
  16. Jura – 3.8
  17. Zürich – 3.5
  18. Basel-Landschaft – 3.3
  19. Obwalden – 3.1
  20. Zug – 3.0
  21. Wallis – 2.0
  22. Freiburg – 2.0
  23. Basel-Stadt – 1.9
  24. Neuenburg – 1.2
  25. Waadt – 1.21
  26. Genf- 1.066311

  1. Ahh I realilze I cut off the legends from the posts, sorry about that, I used the brand colors, save for Volg in the zip map, that one is the stripes. Gray is neutral == Tie.

  2. The usual answer to Swiss questions still applies… 😉

“What’s the most popular Supermarket chain?”

    “Depends on the Kanton…”

  3. Sorry for spamming the comment section, reddit doesn’t let you edit the text of image posts.

I realized some redditors might be able to answer things that got me curious, if you work for Aldi or know, is income data something you look at?

If you work for a general supermarket, what’s the logic behind opening more stores in lower dense regions?

  4. >Denner dominates the Romandie

Weird conclusion when your map shows Denner for only two of the seven cantons in Romandie.

  5. Honestly, I grew up as a migros kind. When i got my first own household i realised how expensive it is compared to aldi denner and so.on and changed to aldi because I can get everything in one store, don’t really have to compare prices and know i wont have overpayed

  6. „Well I was surprised how many more Migros we have than Coop.“

But we don‘t? Coop has over 970 Supermarkets, Migros has over 721 Supermarkets. (incl. Coop Pronto, VOI, MP, etc.)

  7. Nice map! ~~I was curious about 1196 Gland, it lists only a single Coop when I used to shop at Denner when growing up there, which still seems to exist according to Google.~~ [~~https://maps.app.goo.gl/GAuXXGJcZUZTPdpG7~~](https://maps.app.goo.gl/GAuXXGJcZUZTPdpG7)

~~Or is this due to Denner Discount not mapping as a Denner?~~

~~Same thing in 4313 Möhlin, I shopped at Coop and Denner there, but the data only displays 2 Volgs and a Migros.~~

~~Also curious what your plans are for Coop Prontos and similar places :)~~

Edit: I was looking at the hex map and didn’t think to consider that a town can be split into multiple hexes.
