Wait, does that mean that I have been strictly adhering to the speed limits all these years for nothing?!?

Joking aside, there is no reason why foreign drivers should get a free pass – the EU has mechanisms in place to send speeding (and other) tickets to drivers from abroad, and I can assure you, other countries do not hesitate to use these.

And if you need ideas on how to deal with drivers from countries where there is no such mechanism, have a look at what the French do. They'll just stop you at the border – something that would be much easier to do for Finland than for France, really…

  1. Hell, I’ve received 5€ parking tickets from Germany and the local clowns in blue don’t enforce speeding tickets for drivers from other countries?

  2. I wonder what the technical limitations are…

Because anywhere (roughly) in Europe you get caught speeding by a camera, you will get a fine to your house one way or another.

This problem tho, is probably not that big. Especially with no Russians getting into Finland right now. I don’t think the amount of foreign license plates in Finland is that big. It’s no surprise either with how isolated Finland kinda is from the rest of Europe.

  3. Not sure if it’s the same scam, but in Naples there’s plenty of cars with Bulgarian and Polish plates. But the catch is that the driver does not own the vehicle. They’re leased through scammy companies that also won’t reply when pinged about tickets. And on top of that insurance and other fees are way lower.

The solution has been to reduce massively the amount of time one can keep one’s car in Italy with a foreign plate.

  4. This is strange and seems like a glitch that should be easy enough to fix. Other countries have no trouble sending tickets so this is probably changing quickly

  5. You’ve been driving with foreign plates all these *years*? Maybe I should contact Tulli?

  6. Motorcycles are free from speed limits and cameras as well, I wouldn’t worry about a few foreigners.
