This is both clever and educational for me. I’m a foreigner and I have a cousin-in-law who, at every family gathering I attend, tries to lecture me about Urbanus. He means well by this: I think in his own way he is trying to help me integrate and connect with Flemish culture on some deeper intellectual level but it is a lifelong and possibly fruitless struggle against my own benighted ignorance.
The above diagram helps me begin to contextualise Urbanus’ oeuvre and absorb the sophisticated critique and his trenchant analysis of the fault line between peasant traditions and modern mores via sophisticated ironies in a way that a frazzled Dad of two can’t really manage after too many barbecue pintjes.
Man I love this guy. Coincidently I drove by his statue yesterday.
To be honest, I have no clue why “Hittentit” fits in Auth-Right/close to Auth-Center. “Annie zingt een liedje” would also have been a good one for Lib-Center.
