UK won’t trigger Article 16 ‘today’, says Frost as he meets EU on Brexit

  1. Presumably they’re still trying to find lawyers who’ll give legal advice that supports triggering article 16.

Pretty pointless anyway since all it does initially is trigger a month of talks which they’re already having and doesn’t allow them to suspend the protocol itself which seems to be the UK governments goal.

If the UK later decides to take unilateral action it’s risking extremely disruptive corrective action from the EU and we’ve already seen how quickly they backed down when faced with threats from France over fishing licences.

Ultimately the issues the government claims justify A16 are the known consequences of Brexit so it’s unclear what needs fixing given the UK government got what it agreed to.

Brexiters wanted trade barriers, they got trade barriers.
