I’m American, and I’d love to learn more about this region. My grandfather’s parents were from a very small town between Pilzno and Dębica called Dobrków. I’ve never been to Poland, but I’ve always been very interested in the history of the country!

when did your grandparents move to USA? according to wikipedia the nazis completely leveled the village in 1944 and killed/resettled people living there, perhaps your grandparents moved after that because they had nothing left? [https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dobrków](https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dobrków)
there is still a village there these days so ig it was rebuilt after that
EDIT: Tho a XVII-century church is still standing there, so it’s almost certain your grandparents went to it if they lived there
My mother is from right outside Tarnów, and her family raised pigs and then switched to mostly growing strawberries when my uncle took over. They had a two room house with a wood stove. They built a new house next to the old house because he didn’t want to knock down his childhood home.
Tarnów is one of the fastest depopulating city in Poland since 00′ because this region lacks job opportunities. I’ve spend a lot of my childhood there because my grandparents are living there, and even tho the city as a whole might have some problems, the old city is absolutely gorgeous and firmly can be described as one of the best in southern Poland. Also interestingly before world war II Jews were the majority ethnic group.
Dębica is my hometown, nicely located with foot of Carpathian mountain range on south side and Sandomierz basin on the north side, host of bunch of big factories, Goodyear tire plant, Sniezka paint factory, Bicycle and quad assembly plant, Pilzno is much smaller than Dębica and I dont know much about It. Prioziaki Festival which is kind of regional flatbread made with addition of baking soda was held in Pilzno but not sure if they still do it. If you ever want to travel to this region from the USA you can fly to Krakow which is about an hour drive from Pilzno, plenty of things to do and see around there
I am American and my husband’s family lives in Tarnów. We spend every summer in Tarnów and Kraków. The Małopolska train from Kraków Główny stops in many small towns/villages between from Kraków and Tarnów so you could take it to explore the towns. Tarnów has a smaller town vibe but it is very pretty and fun to walk around. The greenery and trees in this part of Poland are lovely and there is a lot of sunshine and warmth in the summer.

I was born in Tarnów, lived south of it, till O went to college. It’s gergous area I miss it very much, densely populated mostly with small (mostly former) farms. It’s rich with truly polish culture, with museums, churches, small towns on every step.
The region is well known for jewish population, but Poles did not get along with them(grandma stories). It is the most warm part of the country. Ppl from there mostly were involved in agriculture.
By the way – “Galicia” is a nazi created term, which then Ukrainians took over(how suprising). Be proud of your Lesser Poland ancestors, they def had a hard time back then.
If you want to know a bit of modern state of this area:
Generally conservative by Polish standards, considered a bit less developed but has a lot of investment going on. Relatively rural, a lot of farming. Very nice people generally and plenty of cute villages
