The Council of the European Union decided to extend the mandate of the EU Partnership Mission in the Republic of Moldova (EUPM) for another two years, until 31 May 2027. The budget allocated for this period is about €20 million, IPN reports.

A press release issued by the Council states that the decision comes after a strategic assessment of the mission and also provides for the extension of the EUPM’s mandate, with an increased focus on providing strategic advice to the Moldovan authorities in the security sector.

“Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Moldova has faced the greatest attempts to undermine democratic institutions. Through this mission, we helped Moldova strengthen its cybersecurity and defense against hybrid threats. The EU’s support for a stronger and more resilient Moldova is an investment in our common security and in Moldova’s European path,” said Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

EUPM Moldova was launched in April 2023 with the aim of assisting the authorities in strengthening crisis management capacities, countering hybrid threats and foreign information manipulation. The mission provides strategic support in the development of policies and strategies, as well as in identifying the needs of organization, training and equipment of the relevant bodies.

The head of the mission is Cosmin Dinescu, and the commander of civilian operations is Stefano Tomat, managing director of the European External Action Service. EUPM Moldova brings together international staff from 12 EU Member States.
