Missouri Senate approves anti-abortion proposal

We’re overturning the constitutional right to abortion. We want the right to abortion in Missouri. I am voting for abortion rights. Hey, so we just passed an abortion ban, but it’s been 6 months since we voted to enshrine abortion rights in Missouri. I haven’t even left the voting booth. It’s not a full abortion ban. Okay, this time abortion would be allowed for medical emergencies, rape, or incest within 12 weeks. And you have to report to law enforcement first. But it also requires parental consent for an abortion for minors and prohibits hormones or drugs to assist a child with gender transition. What does that have to do with abortion? Anyway, you’ll probably get to vote on this next year.

The Missouri Senate approved an anti-abortion proposal, six months after Missourians voted for abortion protections.

The 2024 citizen-led measure passed 52 percent to 48 percent after surviving a lengthy court battle. It enshrined in the Missouri Constitution “the right to make and carry out decisions about all matters relating to reproductive health care” up until fetal viability, about 24 weeks. Missouri state law had allowed abortions only to save a woman’s life, with no exceptions for rape and incest.

Republican legislators now want to reverse that outcome and are asking Missourians to vote on a new constitutional amendment that would repeal Amendment 3 and ban most abortions except for medical emergencies, rape and incest, which can only be performed no later than 12 weeks and if the offense was reported to law enforcement prior to the procedure.

Abortion rights advocates crowded the Senate chamber in the state capital in Jefferson City, shouting “stop the ban” as the lawmakers voted 21-11 to approve the referendum measure in the final week of their session. Rep. Ashley Aune, a Democrat from Platte County, posted on X during the debate, “Missouri, the fight to MAINTAIN our bodily autonomy is on.”

  1. If you're interested in the government's role in public health, I have a long-form video next week on my personal channel (this one I am typing from). I hope you'll subscribe!

  2. Abortion was added to the fourteenth amendment during roe vs wade that doesn’t make it a fundamental constitutional right like the second amendment, next I don’t understand why people are pissed off about this proposed ban like it encompasses every point the left has about abortion and you have till the child develops sentients(12weeks), if your not using abortion for birth control this shouldnt piss you off, its also going to the ballot and will be a statewide vote its on November 2026 it didnt just get passed like this guy said

  3. Abortion was never a constitutional right. It was never in the constitutional or an ammendment. It was a ruling about privacy rights with a doctor that allowed it to exist….

  4. It wasn't a right. It was an implied right in an implied right. Also the Dems had two two term presidents to pass a law on this. You really should be bitching about this to them. For all their claims of being the party of choice they did little to protect something that was only allowed by a court case that such "conservative icons" like Biden and Ginsberg said wasn't particularly good.

Also oh no you can't kill a baby. I feel so bad. Also people the parental consent is so some stranger doesn't take your kid to a medical procedure you don't know about. Yeah sure minority cases that will have negative consequences but how many people in the comment section would be happy if someone you don't know went and got your kid a tattoo? Now apply that to medical procedures and how happy you would be.

  5. Why is this even happening. What grounds did all the elected officials decide to ignore democracy, and institute their own will?

  6. Mention the fact that the missouri poltiicians are also fighting against a required sick leave bill (passed in the same election) that includes minimum wage insreases following inflation. Their reasoning as to why this bill isnt valid? Minimum wage has nothing to do with sick leave. And you can't have 2 topics on 1 bill / amendment.

    This has 2 topics.

  7. Soooo it’s a full ban with a buncha of details to SAY it’s not a full but it’s a full ban because no one is going to qualify for all those details
