This has always been my biggest fear about living in a tower block.
I saw a post from a resident about this yesterday. I am glad that it is receiving media attention now. Hopefully, the issue will be fixed immediately now, and those who have had to suffer will receive some kind of compensation.
I used to live on the 13th floor of a block of flats. When the lift didn’t work, which was often, I’d use the stairs.
How is it possible they don’t have a stair case or emergency exit?
I’m not subscribing to read.
Edit. They do, so they’re aren’t trapped lol
I thought you’re not meant to use a lift in the event of a fire? What do you do if you live at the top and have mobility issues??
~~Someone probably needs to update [their Wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poplar_HARCA) too, considering how much it appears that they like to fill it with puffery and awards they’ve won.~~
Edit: It’s actually Way of Life Management Ltd who manage the tower on behalf of Poplar HARCA as per /u/k3nn3h right corrected me:

That’s the block that is used in lots of films too.
The plural of lift is being used so I guess there is more than one. It is often the case that one lift going out puts too much strain on a fragile second lift. As ever with these stories few facts are given.
The leaseholders had better prepare for a bill to replace them in their entirety if they are worn out.
Love these brutalist style blocks, wouldn’t live in one unless I had the stair climbing ability of a fireman
>He claimed that the building manager asked him to remove the post on Tuesday because of the risk of bad publicity. “It’s a horrible situation,” Yu said. “How can they blame the victims? What if I was dying? What if there was a fire? What if I was severely injured? What happens then?”
Name and shame!
I can’t believe the Housing Association would still lie to the Times about helping people with their deliveries. Reading the original Reddit post that was not true at all. What a joke.
Forgive me for my ignorance but are there no stairs?
I cannot read the article, but can someone confirm whether this is about disabled people who are unable to use the stairs?
Do disabled people just not exist to people in this thread or something?
Knock the bloody thing down. It’s an eyesore. And before all the Goldfinger fanboys come for me, it’s had its time, whilst it’s was modern and groundbreaking when it was constructed, it’s a mess now.
I’m really pleased that this has been highlighted. I remember reading the original post and feeling so sorry for them. Situations like these could also so easily lead to another tragedy like Grenfell as well.

Used to happen all the time in my 7-storey block. Thankfully the guy on 7 was quite fit and WFHed so he offered to carry groceries for everyone. It’s the old and disabled I feel bad for. In HK we always had three lifts per block – one covered all floors, and then there was an odd and an even lift; if the all-floor lift was busy and your odd-floor lift was out, you’d just go down a level via stairs and catch the even-floor lift.
It’s terrible to hear what the residents have gone through. I was always obsessed with Goldfinger’s architecture, including Trellick Tower, but I always had a sense of uneasiness at the idea of these buildings being well past their sell by date.
We had that in our tower flats. 1 of the two elevators broke and was told by maintenance that we are waiting for parts. Then they showed up one day and did maintenance on the other lift, and now both lifts were out and it as a bank holiday weekend.
We were out of both elevators for 5 days. No one (besides the residents) really batted an eye at it.
Whey, saw one of the residents posts on here! Finally hope it’s sorted
