  1. From the article:

A man who served as an aide to a former Ukrainian president has been shot and killed in Madrid, local authorities have said.

An unidentified gunman – or gunmen – shot former politician Andriy Portnov outside the gates of an American school in the Pozuelo area of the Spanish capital on Wednesday morning, according to a source close to the investigation.

Police received a report at 7.15am local time and rushed to the scene.

Mr Andriy is believed to have been taking his children to school.

He served as a senior aide to Ukraine’s former president Viktor Yanukovich before he was ousted in 2014.

  2. Why was this guy allowed to live in Spain? Sounds like a Russian stooge

  3. Does Ukraine have anything to do with this? I’m Spanish and I support Ukraine but I don’t appreciate them killing people in front of schools in Madrid, I hope they don’t have anything to do with it

Edit: Most of you are saying that is very improbable that Ukraine was involved. That’s a relief, thanks everyone for responding!

  4. Has Russia already blame the HUR for murder people in a nato country?

  5. More likely Russia orchestrated it to sow division between Europe and Ukraine.

  6. Ok. After all of the times that I’ve heard of Russians enjoying Spain, this is the final moment I needed to hear before passing judgment on the country. I was skeptical, but there are so many stories.

  7. This isn’t necessary a geopolitical hit. Much more likely that he was mobbed up, being a Yanukovich staffer. There are a ton of Russian gangsters that live in Spain.

  8. He was under sanctions of EU and US for human rights violations.

  9. Must be stressful working for Putin. You never know if you’ll be assassinated by Ukraine, or by Russia.

  10. For context: he was extremely pro russian and considered traitor to Ukraine that made a lot of damage to own country. Poor kids though, bad place but good outcome.

  11. Doubt it has anything to do with the war. Probably mob-related. Yanukovich had very extensive ties with the organized crime.

  12. This guy was a big deal. He managed the kill lists for pro Ukrainian activists and orchestrated many of their murders globaly. Good riddance.

  13. Odds this is Russia? Who am I kidding…it’s always Russia lol.

  14. Isn’t Madrid the same place where Spanish police detained Bill Browder at the behest of a Russian initiated Interpol arrest warrant?

  15. To be clear the president he was an aide to was Viktor Yanukovych, the pro Putin guy that everyone rebelled against.

It was also one of the most corrupt governments, even by the standards of the region.

So the list of people who might have had an issue with this guy is quite long.

Ukrainians who have issue with Russia. Russians who have issues with a former ally. Former business partners who have issues with money….

  16. Mostly like Ukrainian assassination here, he was pro Russia and a traitor to Ukraine. Not a good look Zelensky.

  17. Ah, some good news…anyway, it’s a lovely sunny day in Scotland.

  18. Threre is a ot of talk of how dodgy this chap was, I don’t know enough to comment but looks like it could have been anyone

  19. Spain is a really safe place for people to visit. Except the Russians and Ukrainians just killing people in broad daylight.

  20. Eastern European politics operates on market principles similar to crypto volatility – unpredictable moves with high stakes outcomes. It’s fascinating how many ex-politicians from that region end up with similar fates regardless of which country they flee to. The Yanukovich era figures were essentially running a centralized governance system with zero transparency. Madrid might seem safe compared to Moscow, but capital doesn’t protect you when you’ve accumulated enemies on both sides of a conflict.
