The Trump administration’s attempts to gut 12 energy efficiency standards could cost Americans billions of dollars in higher electricity bills.
The Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced that it plans to rollback dozens of policies in what it called its “largest deregulatory effort in history.” While the DOE claims that getting rid of “burdensome and costly” rules would save $11 billion, that doesn’t take into account the costs Americans would bear if they have to use more energy-hungry appliances.
Adding up those costs, the deregulation spree would ultimately lead to about $43 billion in higher electricity bills for households and businesses, according to an analysis by the Appliance Standards Awareness Project (ASAP) that was first shared with The Verge.

Does Trump just hate people? We know that he hates the environment.
Of course they would. What imbeciles ever thought sacrificing energy efficiency is a good idea? Oh, US Republicans. Enough said. Dumbest people on the planet.
Rolling back energy efficiency is literally the exact opposite of what you’d do if there was actually an “energy emergency”, same with blocking renewable energy projects.
It’s clear the only “emergency” they’re addressing is declining market share for fossil fuels
Sure, but think of the dividends!
This hurts poor/middle class the most. Energy efficiency/electrical bills is a disproportionately higher percent of income expenditure for those groups. Everyone needs electricity. I went from a rooftop package HVAC to 22 SEER minisplits. Electric bill went from $450 a month during summer to around $200 AFTER utilities increased rates by around 10%. $250 a month is pretty significant to poor/middle class, with 37% of middle-class households reporting they can’t afford a $400 unexpected expense.
And because I have higher efficient devices, it makes sense to invest in a whole house battery backup system and shift to a cheaper time of use plan. I pay half the price per kwh versus standard residential pans because I can zero grid consumption for 6 hours of peak time during the day. Power outages aren’t a concern anymore. Payback time for battery system is around 2 years (assuming inflation reduction act still exists). In 2023 my May bill was $250. If I had the whole house battery running since the start of the month, my bill would’ve been $110.
Electric bills/energy efficiency is a “poor tax”. By encouraging manufacturers to produce more efficient products, everyone saves, and we have more money to participate in the economy.
yeah add that to the pile of everything else we’re going to be paying way more for.
we had hired some of the top scientist in the world at a reduced rate because they wanted to be part of big American projects.
we shit can those project midstream throwing out decades of work and fired the scientists.
Moody’s downgraded our economy.
and federal workers that used to be a safe job and its stability would get people to work for it for a lesser rate is now over.
I mean who are we fooling Democrats aren’t going to be able to put this together not with an American populace that is so incredibly brain dead.
But if by some miracle we managed to keep this entire thing from falling apart we’re going to be paying twice as much for a third of the service.
Yes and no.

CONservative policies are usually penny wise and pound foolish. Or, in summary, just foolish.
