Fuck Irish public transportation…. nearly 9 hours to go from Cork to Maynooth. Eamon Ryan can go suck a lemon if he thinks it’s a suitable alternative to owning a car

  1. I hate Eamon Ryan as much as anyone but did he ever even suggest that public transport cross-country was a suitable alternative to owning a car?

  2. You’d be better off getting a bus (aircoach or gobus) to Dublin then getting a train or bus out to Maynooth. Faster and around the same price.

Edit: if you can get a train from Heuston Gobus would be better than aircoach cause it stops at Heuston.

  3. Eh? Just do Cork->Dublin and get one of the Dublin buses out to Maynooth from Heuston.

This is more shite app logic than shite transport links.

  4. I lived in Korea for 2 years. The intercity buses run to the minute and really regularly. They’re cheap and comfortable and I don’t remember ever not arriving at the scheduled time.

I also lived in Germany, and their u-bahn trains and trams are timetabled to the second. If it says the next train is at 13:45:32 at 30 seconds past the train is arriving and the doors open at 32. It’s crazy.

Now I live in Thailand and the public transport is fucking mayhem at times. The subways and skytrain in Bangkok are decent but the buses are a bit wild at times especially the minivans. Drivers tweaking from amphetamines as they drive along. It’s nuts.

Ireland can definitely do a bit better. These buses that come on and off the motorway all the way up are a nightmare. I’ve done it once or twice and it’s horrendous.

  5. Is this the same Eamon Ryan who’s authorised the greatest expansion in rail car purchases and buses in the states history ?

Yes, our public transport is not good enough yet. But we know cars are not going to work. Look at the latest IPCC report – thats why its being expanded.

  6. It all depends on how you search for your route. Often company websites or google maps won’t pickup on a certain link you could actually take if you switched companies, etc.

  7. True. It took me 3.5 hours to get from Dublin Airport to Kilkenny yesterday. Flight was delayed. No coach for 3 hours between 4 p.m and 7p.m. so taxi €30 to Heuston followed by 2 x €26 . A complete rip off of a country. In Scotland I can go from one end of the country to the other for £20 max.

  8. Yeah, I checked this on google maps and it’s between 3hr 54mins and 4hrs 41mins to get from Parnell Place Cork to Maynooth with public transport. That’s compared with 2hr 30min driving with tolls and 3hr6min without tolls.

There’s plenty to complain about public transport without exaggerating.

  9. Fun fact, Europe’s largest trail database, Deutsch Bahn, has times and connections for every route in the EU except Ireland because the system can’t figure it out. Irish Rails endpoint is a PDF so the system can’t handle it.

  10. Doesn’t matter where you are either. For example: Drimnagh to Mespil Road -> 15 mins Drive or 20 mins cycle. Public transport? 49 minutes…

  11. 3.19 hrs by train/bus per Google on Monday morning. cork-heuston, 115 to maynooth Whatever you’re looking at here is just a bad app.

  12. I still can’t get over the price of it to get from Dublin to Cork (train) for example, while squeezing into their schedule.

It’s a small island, with decent sized work hubs in most of the bigger cities, you’d think a rail/bus service would encourage that.

I’ve seen a lot of people move back home out of Dublin during Covid who can now work remote etc, obviously they wouldn’t want to pay Dublin rent so maybe “MAYBE” with more demand coming from the other counties, the gov might actually try and support them with some useful infrastructure. Maybe wishful thinking, but vote your needs.
