Doesn’t a metro need a city and tend to be underground?
Doesn’t North Wales kinda lack cities and have ground that would make it somewhat impactical to dig up (lots of historical conservation concerns, mines, hills that make a flat metro kinda difficult)?
> Upon completion of rail line works at Padeswood, increase train services between Wrexham and Bidston to two trains per hour within the next three years, with four trains per hour running direct between Wrexham and Liverpool by 2035.
A half-hourly service was the goal for years.
My understanding from speaking to staff is that the current timetable of a train every 45 min using a total of 3 trains on the route is about the ‘best’ they can do.
I would also have concerns about the reliability of the existing Class 230 trains if they use 4 sets vice the current 3(?) that seem to be in use.
> The existing Borderlands Line will also be renamed the Wrexham – Liverpool line, with trains wrapped to reflect the communities and football clubs they serve.
This feels unnecessary – the current name reflects the region well. Also why does the branding need to be linked to football?!
Are there gonna be toilets ???
Why am I getting HS2 vibes from this?
..HS2, The English network that doesn’t reach Wales and here we are with a North Wales network where the largest train element from Wrexham will spend more time in England than Wales!
TfW will probably take more revenue from the English pickup stops on the way than from the Wrexham tickets. Perhaps there’s method in the madness?
Wrecsam is so far East, that it almost doesnt count as N Wales. When will we get a half decent rail service in North Wales?
Ah yes this will be a fantastic for the people of Gwynedd and Anglesey
Duw duw! State of these comments – “when will North Wales get a better service?”
Commencing work on the line between Wrexham and Liverpool as the crucial first phase of delivering metro services direct between the two cities.
Doubling train services between Wrexham and Chester next May.
**Bringing forward the introduction of 50% more services across the North Wales mainline from December 2026 to next May – resulting in a new service from Llandudno to Liverpool and extending the Manchester Airport service to Holyhead in place of Llandudno.**
Upon completion of rail line works at Padeswood, increase train services between Wrexham and Bidston to 2 trains per hour within the next three years, ahead of the introduction of 4 trains per hour that will run direct between Wrexham and Liverpool by 2035.
The existing Borderlands Line will also be renamed the Wrexham – Liverpool line.
Key stations on the Wrexham – Liverpool line will be improved in the next 12 months.
Trains operating on the Wrexham – Liverpool line will be wrapped to reflect the communities and football clubs they serve.
Introducing Pay as You Go tap in tap out technology – covering connections between Gobowen and Rhyl, and along the full length of the Wrexham -Liverpool line.
Working with Network Rail to determine the feasibility of a rapid delivery of a new test railway station at Deeside Industrial Park, to gauge demand for permanent services to the park.
**A new, multi-million pound electrification innovation fund to develop a plan to decarbonise the railway in North Wales and enable more frequent metro services and additional stations**
Match funding for step-free access at Shotton and Ruabon stations.
**Working with local authorities to develop plans for Gateway multi-modal interchanges at Holyhead, Bangor, Caernarfon and Wrexham.**
A new T13 bus service – connecting Rhyl, Ruthin, Denbigh and Wrexham.
**Examining options to re-open stations and build new stations to serve employment growth areas.**
A new bus network specifically designed to link communities with industrial estates in the Flintshire and Wrexham Investment Zone.
Not a metro, not covering most of North Wales, but at least the Welsh government is working with the Liverpool City Region and Cheshire West to improve cross-border public transport provision and get people where they want to go instead of where Cardiff thinks they should go
Upgrades to the Borderlands Line will be good and improve connectivity for the Wirral as well, but I don’t see diesel hybrid trains running through the Loop anytime soon (maybe terminate the train at James Street?). With GBR on the way I can see the LCR/Merseytravel yanking Merseyrail out of the national rail network so TfW services using Merseyrail tracks might never get off the ground
North Wales Coast Line services running to Liverpool will be good for some rail users, there’s a lot of changing at Chester already and some might prefer direct services that also get them close-ish to John Lennon
Shame theres no proposals for opening lines in the interior of North Wales or west of Llandudno, that would be a real game changer
Glad to see one new service in there and some frequency increases. Sometimes the stopping trains along the North Coast are very clogged 2-car 158s. Very silly. And yippie long term electrification.
Low key some more new routes would be fabulous but we all know governments worldwide are allergic to considering mobility a service. Somehow it always needs to make money. Not cars and roads though, they can rack up costs like there’s no tomorrow and governments keep throwing money at them.

If you all read the Gov.Wales report you’d see it – https://www.gov.wales/metro-go-network-north-wales
