Tensions have flared in Belgium following the country’s Eurovision 2025 voting results for Israel. While the Belgian public awarded Israel the maximum 12 points, the national jury gave it none—sparking a wave of criticism.

The pro-Israel organization Hart Voor Israël has formally requested an independent investigation by Belgium’s national broadcaster VRT, raising concerns over the impartiality of the jury. At the center of the controversy is singer Noémie Wolfs, who had previously participated in an Oxfam campaign in support of Palestine.

VRT’s Response

VRT defended the integrity of its selection process, stating that jury members are chosen based on professional music credentials and in accordance with age and gender balance guidelines. The broadcaster also emphasized that the jury lineup is reviewed and approved by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and remains confidential until the final to ensure neutrality.

Despite these reassurances, Hart Voor Israël maintains that the significant discrepancy between the public and jury votes warrants a “prompt and transparent investigation into possible ideological bias.”

Eurovision Caught in Political Crossfire

This incident is not isolated. Over recent months, Israel’s participation in Eurovision has drawn increasing criticism within Belgium. Ahead of the first semi-final, VRT and the public sector union ACOD aired a pro-Palestinian video produced by Oxfam. In 2024, VRT also interrupted its Eurovision broadcast to display an on-screen statement condemning Israel for alleged human rights violations.

Politics or Deflection from Poor Results?

Some commentators suggest that the ongoing debate may be a distraction from Belgium’s underwhelming performance in the contest. This year’s entrant, Red Sebastian, failed to qualify for the final, placing second to last in his semi-final—marking the second consecutive year Belgium missed out on the grand final.

What’s clear is that, although Eurovision 2025 has concluded, the aftermath of its voting results—especially the jury-public divide—will remain a topic of discussion for the foreseeable future.
