I keep reading this (anything up to 20 mini reactors) but suspect they Tories will just keep announcing it until 2 are built then keep re-announcing the same 2…
> Prime Minister Boris Johnson said this morning “nuclear is coming home”
Yes, that was a particularly fuckwittish thing to say, even for that clown.
> So instead of a new reactor every decade we will have a new reactor every year.
I assume this is a bit like the nurses and hospitals claims, where they really mean they’ll just not close some reactors, or they’ll paint a little picture of a reactor every year. Either way, as the promise is that these will be up and running by 2050, it’s not a promise Boris has to worry about keeping.
They can go next to the 40 new hospitals they promised…
Will these all be financed by the Chinese or the French with the majority of the profits going out of our country to support their governments instead?
Seems a bit light on details other than one a year. Like when ? In one year are we going to have a fully functional new nuclear reactor online ? Then 2024 another and so on ?
Cos I’m not buying that.
I’m sure they’ll go better than the over budget, late and failing EDF built station with this governments track record of major infrastructure projects…
The actual strategy:
“We *expect* to initiate the selection process in 2023 for further UK projects, with the *intention* that government will enter negotiations with the most credible projects to enable a *potential* government award if support *as soon as possible*.”
So no actual firm commitments of anything, then.
I’ll believe this when the first joule of power comes out of one of these power stations
Reminds me of that saying that one woman can have a baby in 9 months but 9 women can’t have a baby in one month.
How many of those new homes they promised got built? And new homes don’t need containment buildings…
These are the new SMR that Rolls Royce have designed.
The entire point about these new SMR are that they are modular in design which makes they production and building much simpler and cheaper.
The tech behind the actual reactors themselves is not new and are tried and tested, so is the building of then.
So yes, it is entirely possible to build a new SMR so you have 1 a year.
Now if the only involvement from the Government is paying the bill then it can happen.
If they get involved in any other way then it’s fucked.
I suspect what will happen is that once the design has been signed off you will see many countries which have already shown a tremendous amount of interest in the Rolls Royce SMR design so up to have the built whilst we dick about for years about their placement and price.
Tory pledge, probably means dungeoness is getting a paint job
The only nuclear reactor built in Europe in the last 10 years has just come on line. 12 years late.
One a year is never going to happen
Going to have to strength the blinds to keep the flying pigs out.
One a year…surely some bit are in parallel. Like design and setting up factory will take 5 or 4 years but that can happen all at once, the. You take that design and central factory and put out one every 6 months in year 5 to 10
Nuclear always raise some alarm bells and this does have the smell of some Tory scheme about it. However, micro reactors are actually a good idea to prop up the grid for the peaks when we have to purchase power from France. A massive new plant and another sizewell should not be required though. Rolls Royce make small reactors for subs and aircraft carriers and have done perfectly safely for many decades. Those are small sealed devices which generate enough electricity to power a reasonably sized town continuously… they need little servicing and can generate power for like a decade.
What kind of reactors? If it’s thorium based ones hell yeah. If it’s uranium based ones then gtfo.
Then becomes less once London gets it’s reactors built and the north is cancelled whilst being millions overbudget.

If you look on the Govt website there is an image up there from the 2012/13 Cameron energy strategy review to show progress. 9 new reactors. Guess how many have been started ? https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/map-of-nuclear-power-stations-in-the-uk
