  4. Well, an iPhone made in the USA will be a lot more expensive than one made in China or India with a 25% tariff, and it’ll take at least 5 years to get a factory set up, as if that’ll happen.

    Let’s say Apple will agree to manufacturing in the US. This leads to a new factory and increases labor costs (passed to the consumer). In addition, apple now needs to import the raw material which costs money plus the tarrifs (also passed to the consumer).

    The manufacturing jobs it creates will take time and in order to keep costs down will offer jobs at minimum wage (or try and hire immigrants).

    In the end. The consumer pays more for the same product and gains absolutely nothing.

    The president needs incentives for the business to bring items here not a fear tactic. For example for every US manufactured phone that is sold in the US the company get 0.001% off their final tax bill or some shit like that

    Trump couldn’t do more to harm American interests if he publicly announced that doing so was his actual intention.

    This will boost sales of phone makers like Samsung, Huawei and Xaomei as those companies have no problem selling shitty low cost phones that will be affordable even with tariffs. Apple will slowly (or maybe not slowly) be priced out of the market.

  27. I thought the tariffs were paid by the country where the product was made? If Apple has to pay it, their costs go up and it just ends up getting paid as a regressive tax on the American consumer. Someone must have hacked trumps acct.

  30. A 25% tariff would basically be a discount in comparison to what it will cost to build factories and make them in the US. They still have to import the rare minerals from China to make the chips. lol.
