  1. So many people do this. Seen one guy . He knows the exact carriage and doors to rush out and ‘tap in’ nearer to his stop. Then he rushes back in. Fares are expensive. But maybe they are expensive because of all the fair dodgers and tail gaters. Maybe they are expensive because our fairs are paying for staff who do nothing to challenge fair dodgers.

  2. “SWR recovered over £1 million from fraud cases over the last year. This includes an individual who owed over £49,000 for five years of dodging fares.”

    A take away from this..

    £9,500 a year for a train..

I mean.. in Switzerland it doesn’t cost anywhere near that
GA travel card in Switzerland, is nearly all trains, buses, trams and some boats for a year.

    About £3500..

Maybe if we didn’t get fucked in the arse for train tickets, that number might decrease a little.

But as every transport minister says “it’s vital we continue to invest in our railways”..

    Decades later.. still fucked.

  3. I get how the 16-17 Railcard was found out but how do they know he was travelling from Surrey?

  4. Train tickets are ridiculous the sooner it’s nationalised the better.

  5. The biggest crime is 10k a year for traveling by train. Wtaf

  6. Eight week’s worth of investigation from who knows how many police staff to save money for a train company that already charges the highest prices in Europe. Brilliant.

  7. 8 weeks worth of work and a 9-man team to track him… for just 20k

Hardly seems worth it. Let the guy off

  8. Holy moly… I mean, you can kinda see why they were dodging the fares can’t you.

I think this is more a commentary on how extortionate (and I do mean actual extortion) train fares have become.

  9. So he should really have just shorted the ticket from random stations everyday and wouldn’t have been caught …

  10. Am I supposed to be mad at this guy? We’re all getting fucked by our shitty expensive rail system, the fact it’s even possible to rack up 20k in fines is more indicative of how shit commuting is not how much of bastard this guy is

  11. “The latest episode of Channel 5 documentary Fare Dodgers: At War with the Law shows undercover officers deployed at stations used by the fare dodger, tracking his movements before apprehending him when he arrived at the platform at Waterloo.”

It will never stop to amaze me how Brit’s get entertained by content like this.

  12. Fuck that shit website with so many adverts you can’t navigate it.

  13. The amount of apologists in this thread. Yeah we pay too much but doesn’t excuse this cunt taking advantage while most other pay their share.

  14. Yeah if you could skip train fares you would too. Have you seen ticket prices in the UK?

  15. Maybe if trains weren’t such a ripoff people would be more willing to pay. Yes he’s a crim, but so are the train companies.

  16. Thousands are doing this on the daily

This just the poor bloke they went after

  17. If fraud is costing them £40 million per year and they are recovering only £1 million either they are not resourcing their detection teams adequately or aren’t that bothered.

  18. Fuck the train ticket prices , I’ve got to take about £3k of my gross salary each year to pay for these parasites that work at the stations

  19. Can’t be mad, costs me £40 just to go see my mum and hour and a half away so obviously I don’t go because I can’t afford that.
Train companies need to manage their pricing and maybe we wouldn’t be seeing police time having to be wasted on something that most people can sadly sympathise with because of being price gouged themselves

  20. Just invest in getting some barriers at all train stations and this won’t happen anymore

  21. Plot twist he was let go because the investigator didn’t know the caution and anything he said after an incorrect one was given wasn’t admissible.

  22. Plot twist: £20k in fares would only get you in and out of London 10 times.

  23. The convoluted ticketing system in this country for rail fare is the root cause for all of this shit. If it was simple and straightforward, there would be no dodging fares by gaming the system because there is nothing to game.

  24. Somebody I know was under surveillance for months dodging fares for one stop into the travel card zone, where he’d then continue with a travel card. They really built up a case against him before confronting him. It could have been really bad for him with longterm consequence for his career etc, but eventually he was able to strike some kind of legal deal. They do put people under surveillance until they have loads of evidence about repeat offenders.

  25. They must have spent significantly more than £20k on the months long operation for evading £20k worth of train tickets. That’s what is scandalous to me.

This is another example of the disproportionate resources spent on chasing pennies from the poor whilst ignoring the millions that the rich cheat out of the system.

  26. Train tickets are rip off no wonder people do this. I also love how all train and tube staff get pretty much free travel but don’t have to pay a benefit in kind tax like every well has to do on their benefits.

  27. IIRC there was a guy who travelled without a ticket for a large part of his journey without a ticket. Then I think he bought a ticket for the shortest part of his journey into The City.

Was caught and charged with fare evasion. He’d been doing this for 20 years or something.

Fella worked in a bank. Once they found out, he was deemed not to be “fit and proper” and lost his job.

  28. Tracking this guy for MONTHS?? Meanwhile on the tube, I see at least 3 people bumping the gates every single day and TFL staff just staring into space.
