  4. As an Italian I’m proud we’re standing firm on this. Putin’s war machine won’t stop unless we cut off the money flowing to it and these sanctions are exactly what we need right now

  5. In 2024 italy handed out one third of all the schengen visas which Russians received.

    They don’t import energy from Russia, they import people.

  6. Makes sense that Italy would support this. Energy independence is a big deal for the whole EU, especially after the last few years. Can’t afford to rely on Russian gas forever.

  9. ROME, May 22 (Reuters) – Italy fully supports European Union efforts to stop Russian gas imports into the bloc by 2027, the country’s energy minister told reporters on Thursday, adding any decisions by Rome to boost LNG imports from the U.S. were up to private buyers.

    Italy last year imported a small quantity of Russian gas which was mainly exported to Austria, the minister said, adding that the country was now independent from supplies coming from Moscow.

    The EU said this month [it would propose](https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/climate-energy/eus-plan-phase-out-russian-gas-by-end-2027-2025-05-06/) legal measures to phase out imports of Russian gas and LNG by the end of 2027, ending a decades-old energy relationship which crumbled after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

    “The fact that we have increased regasification capacity means that there is room to buy more LNG if it is competitive compared with (gas arriving via) pipeline,” Pichetto said.

    He added, however, that U.S. LNG was currently being offered at high prices when it reaches Europe.

    “How is it possible that American gas leaves the shores of Florida at $10-12 per megawatt hour (MWh),” he said. ” …. (and) it arrives on the shores of Portugal at $36 per MWh? This is part of bargaining between private operators and not between states”.

  10. This should have happened as soon as the war started. They had 8 years after 2014 when it was clear that dealing with Russia was a mistake.

  13. That’s actually pretty good. Italy has had a significant amount of Russian gas import. It’s been reduced, though. Long term game plan should be to phase out gas entirely.

  16. What the F is taking so long? Eleven years after Russia annexed Crimea Europe still wants to fund the aggression against itself for two more years. That’s insane.
