  1. “quickly realised she was only there to be ogled.”
That must have been a devastating revelation, especially after realising that you stand no chance at winning after having seen the competition. Fair play for trying to save face with this bogus story.

  2. Hell yeah. Good for her. I’m rarely proud to be British. Usually we’re a bunch of wankers but she stuck up for her values and she has my backing.

  3. It’s past time to end these silly contests. And child ones too (looking at you USA).

  4. calling her “plus size” is laughable, i can’t believe we’re still talking abt ppl’s bodies like this. what even constitutes “plus size”, the muscle in her thighs from surfing? what a load of ballix

  5. Good on her for standing up for herself if she felt unsafe or exploited, but my god, this seems entirely what I’d expect from a ‘Miss World’ contest. Horrible, outdated competition. (At least, I assume – the idea itself sounds so naff and icky to me).

  6. It’s baffling that there’s anything resembling the father ted lovely girls competition in the 21st century

  7. its literally a beauty show…

just like the ring girls at a boxing event, what do these girls expect the men to care about what they have to say or some shit?

If they had valuable things to say they would be saying them instead of working their butts off to attend and win beauty contests…

  8. I mean, duh, it’s the entire purpose of pageants – why did you even enter?

  9. on the one had she’s right that they are weird and anachronistic

on the other… she did choose to enter the contest in the first place, what did she expect?

  10. “As far as I could see it hasn’t changed and is stuck in the past. Morally, I couldn’t be a part of it” She quickly realised she was only there to be ogled

    she told the Sun

  11. Source is the sun, that’s all I need to know to avoid that link like the plague

  12. Oh the *lovely girl* was affronted when she realised she was in a ‘Lovely Girl’ competition…

  13. If you have to have these competitions, maybe don’t have them in countries with backwards attitudes towards women.

  14. Is she the best we can do. There’s better looking women down my street.

  15. “I went there to make a difference”. Of course you did.

  16. Let’s be honest, perhaps hosting it in a notoriously mysoginistic country wasn’t the best idea in the first place? I bet at least some of those women were pressured to give “favours” to the donors and told it would give then a better chance of winning

  17. i feel like these issues have been shouted from the rooftops for years , how is this news ?
