Bratislava is more relevant and dominant in every aspect.
Because its historical value is from over 1000 years ago. Bratislava has been acquired by the Czechoslovak republic mainly because Czechs wanted access to Danube through a big city, so they made it a Slovak capital and over the years invested huge resources into further developing it. Otherwise the capital would be Martin which isn’t even on your map roughly between Orava and Vyšehrad.
Because Nitra is one big village….And Bratislava was the coronation city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire….
Because when Czechoslovakia was formed, the Czechoslovak leadership had ambitions. They wanted Bratislava both because of the industry and because of the Danube. Otherwise, the Germans and Hungarians wanted to create an independent state with Bratislava, Czechoslovakia simply occupied it.
Bratislava has a fantastic location. It is located by a large river that runs through much of Europe. At the same time it is close to Vienna which is a very important city and not so far from Budapest.

If the capital of Slovakia had to be moved from Bratislava to a different city, the most obvious choices would be Martin for historic reasons, and Banská Bystrica for geographical reasons, not Nitra. The city of Žilina would be another natural choice, as it was the seat of the government of Slovakia and thus its de facto capital very briefly, when parts of Bratislava were occupied by Hungary.
Nitra has lost it’s importance somewhat in early 12th century, when the border principality (with Nitra as capital) was abolished, and then further in 13th century, when the city was given as a fief to Nitra’s bishop (I think, cant remember specifics now). This hampered the city’s grow, ande it lose its general status in Slovak lands as THE city.
Once Bratislava became coronation city in 16th century, it was the one of, or even most important town north of Danube. And that didnt change since.
