Ukraine and Russia have begun the largest prisoner swap of the war to date, with an expected 1,000 captured soldiers and civilians to be released on each side, with the first group of prisoners due to cross the Belarusian border today.
President Trump congratulated the two warring nations on the exchange. “A major prisoners [sic] swap was just completed between Russia and Ukraine,” he wrote on his Truth Social account. “It will go into effect shortly. Congratulations to both sides on this negotiation. This could lead to something big???”
More soldiers are expected to be released tomorrow and Sunday.
The exchanges have been staggered due to the large number of soldiers being exchanged. Ukrainians are hoping for the return of more soldiers captured at the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, who have reportedly been held in poor conditions for three years this week. The majority of those already returned reported being tortured by their Russian captors
