It ain’t even second best city in the UK
Ridiculous that NYC is number 1 imo
Terrible list, needs to put more weight on salaries vs cost of living.
I can see it. Tokyo is on par with London imo. Transport is better but it lacks comparable green space.
Yeah its great if youre visiting or wealthy/high income and live in a nice part of the city. Otherwise its a struggle
I don’t feel like it is, don’t get me wrong it has its good moments when the weather is nice but it’s definitely over-hyped usually by Americans who see London and Paris as some fairytale cities with rose tinted spectacles on.
One of the world’s only truly international cities.
London is only great when you have cash.
Slightly skeptical of the methodology behind any global cities index that gives Beijing a similar ranking to Cardiff.
According to this sub, it’s absolutely fucking shite.
Anyway, back in the real world, London is a great city, 100% but I’m not sure it’s the second best tbh.
Those “best” rankings always kill me with their arbitrary metrics, and, even worse, the fact that they must use metrics at all, measuring things that can’t be easily measured and ignoring those that can’t even that.
This is made by Oxford Economics, so it’s going to be biased towards that, it just masquerades as overall best. Economy, human capital (wtf?) and investment stability count for two-thirds of the total, quality of life just a quarter – and the criteria for quality of life are risible, a banker’s idea of what makes it nice to reside in a city, not live in one.
You’ll note that nowhere is there any attempt to measure the fact that X city feels more and more empty and every interaction involves money and a tablet turned towards you for more money, that commuting to work takes 2 hours each way, that every neighbourhood has amazingly cosy pubs, that you can cycle to mountains or beach or forest in 30 mins, that you can eat Ethiopian, Filipino, or Uzbek food on a whim, that you are likely to meet not one dominatrix who’s also an aerospace engineer, but 10 – or the opposite, that everyone you meet will be like you.
Basically, everything that makes a place home is reduced to “there are 0.0056 museums per 1,000 population” and even that’s given a third of the importance of “the economy is 73% diversified”.
City rankings are utter shit.
These rankings are meaningless and people take them far too seriously
That “Oxford Economics” looks like a total sham. They have a PO box in Oxford at best.. their “lead economist” doesn’t even have a proper profile on Linkedin.. not to mention their own website.
“Prestigious new ranking”
according to who? London’s mum? it is an extremely average city. incredibly poor salaries for such a supposed major city too.
San Jose being #4 on this list makes me dismiss the whole thing.
London’s not even the 2nd best city in the UK.
Been behind NYC for decades haha.
Official you say! That settles it then.
Best city in the world my ass.
