Netherlands abandons Tomahawk integration in submarines

  1. Good call. In addition to the reasons mentioned in the article it would be unwise to become dependant on the US going forward.

  2. So the decision is based on time and cost, added benefit now they are becoming French.

  3. I’m genuinely surprised this took as long as it did. I thought the Americans were going to veto the integration because the submarine was French. But apparently that wasn’t even necessary.

That said, while the French (and Italian I think) version is much cheaper the timeframe would probably still be longer. I would like to know the **real** motivation forthe Dutch to abandon the tom

  4. Tomahawks might be the all time best name for a weapon system.

  5. It’s quite amusing as the netherlands has always been, after the UK, the most US appeasing nation in the Euro.

The US and NL made a deal to put US missiles in french built subs. But ofcourse for submarines that likely will be in service for possibly 50 years, you don’t want to suffer an american blackmail scheme as trump is doing now.

So much for the international american arms industry, it was a good ride while it lasted.

  6. The sooner they can ween themselves off American weaponry the better off they’ll be. Going to take a while for European defence companies to come up to speed but the US isn’t a reliable ally anymore.

  7. While not discussed in the article (which mentioned it becoming cost prohibitive), I would currently be weaning myself off of US military weapons if I was an EU country. I would be highly concerned about the supply chain due to tariffs and an unpredictable, unstable US government that might block their sale over any perceived slight, and I’d look to a more stable partner from France, the UK, or elsewhere.

  8. AFAIK Kongsberg and Thyssen Krupp are working on integrating NSM on the 212CD, giving it long distance (althoug significantly shorter than tomahawk) anti-ship and land attack cruise missile capacity.

  9. Because of the “ kill switch “ build in and as all European knows, all 500 millions , Americans are not too be thrusted

  10. Nah. It’s cover story so they don’t have to tell truth…phook djt they don’t wanna do business with USA.

  11. We will have them on frigates though – we just did an exercise with that.

  12. Unfortunately they have to. Tomahawks are American, and Americans can no longer be trusted as allies (see how USA is now acting towards Canada, Greenland, Ukraine, and even South Korea).
