Billionaire Elon Musk‘s social media platform X, formerly Twitter, has been hit by outages on Saturday as thousands of users have reported issues.

From after 8 a.m. ET, many users across the world were struggling to access certain X webpages and had problems with the app and login page, according to Downdetector.

Internet observatory Netblocks.org confirmed X was experiencing international outages unrelated to internet disruptions or filtering in a specific country.

Newsweek has contacted X via email for comment on Saturday.

Why It Matters

Saturday’s outage comes only two days after users on the social media platform experienced another outage for several hours, adding to negative headlines for the platform that Musk purchased in 2022 for $44 billion.

He has fired 80 percent of his staff, and his promise to rollback censorship has led to accusations from critics that he has tilted the platform to promote right-wing politics and suit his own agenda.

What To Know

Downdetector, which tracks user experiences and outages across different websites, said that users were struggling to access certain X webpages and had issues with the app and login page.

The problems started shortly after 8 a.m. ET Saturday and within an hour, there were 11,871 reports logged. The most reported problem was the app (69 percent), the website (23 percent) and the login (8 percent).

X users posted comments on Downdetector expressing their anger about the situation.

“Twitter (X) was down most of the day yesterday, and it’s down again today, what’s going on?” one user asked.

Another user posted, “another day another X debacle ..musk must go.”

It comes two days after a data center outage affected users. The next day, X’s engineering team said in a statement the platform was still experiencing issues from that outage and that login and signup services were unavailable for some people.

X’s developer platform said that login with X and other X platform login flows were facing a “degraded performance.”

The site has had a number of widespread outages since Musk’s acquisition. It also experienced another outage in March, which Musk blamed on a “massive cyberattack” that he said had been conducted “with a lot of resources.”

What People Are Saying

X’s developer platform on Saturday: “Login with X (OAuth) and other X platform login flows are experiencing degraded performance.”

What Happens Next?

Along with the technical problems on the platform and accusations that it amplifies misinformation, X has been losing its user base, which may continue.

Figures from X published in April required to be released under the European Union‘s (EU) flagship tech rulebook, the Digital Services Act—show that since August 2024, the platform has lost 11 million European users.

The biggest exoduses were reported in France (2.7 million), Poland (1.8 million) and Germany (1.3 million).
