CORDOVA, Illinois (KWQC) – Around 4 a.m. Thursday, crews at Constellation Energy’s Nuclear Power Plant in Cordova, Illinois battled a fire in an electrical room, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. This prompted officials at the plant to declare an “Unusual Event” – the lowest of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) emergency classifications.
According to reports submitted to the NRC, the fire was quickly extinguished by the plants onsite fire crews. According to officials with the NRC, no injuries were reported and no harm to public health or safety was reported.
As is required with any emergency at a nuclear power plant, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was notified along with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, FEMA and local emergency management officials. The NRC confirmed to KWQC that the cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, and an investigation into the cause continues.
KWQC has reached out to Constellation Energy for further comment, but have not heard back.
