I saw these doors high up at Farringdon station on the Thameslink platform heading north (towards Cambridge/Peterborough ect).

Just wondering what this might've been from or if anyone knew the history. You can see they've closed it off from the inside by a plank of wood.

Very random.

  1. I think, but could well be proven wrong by someone else, that any doors like this that are high up are from when they had to lower down goods to the waiting horses and carts.

  2. I’m not sure but architectural “ghosts” like this are so fascinating. Farringdon is one of the oldest stations so it’s seen multiple rebuilds, from steam-era infrastructure all the way to electric trains.

Hope you find an answer 🙂

  3. That’s my house. It’s a bit of a climb but the rent is cheap and it’s got great transport connections.

  4. In the olden days, fare dodgers were pushed out of these doors into oncoming trains.

  5. That was likely accessed by a flight of wooden or metal stairs that led down to the platform that are no longer there.

Replacing the windows must have been deemed too much of a faff.

  6. It’s Juliet’s balcony. It’s never been in Verona, but in Farringdon station. Her ghost appears occasionally, usually during planned engineering works.

  7. There is a blocked up opening on the other side (albeit without doors), which leads me to believe it was for a walkway. The station was previously called Farringdon & High Holborn – I’ve found a couple of images from the 1930s:

There is a walkway nowadays, but I can’t tell if it’s in the same place. So either the walkway moved, or there was something else there. But if so, I would have thought it would be where the advertising boards are in the above pictures. Or perhaps it was a later addition.
