MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Light, Gas and Water’s (MLGW) $30 million modernization project has begun construction, officials said.
The Weaver-Gill Project is a 5.4 mile pipeline running from Gill Road in Barton Heights to Weaver Road. It is designed to improve the distribution of natural gas in South Memphis and is expected to be in service by October, officials said.
According to MLGW, the 24-inch high-pressure distribution pipeline replaces two 18-inch extra high-pressure gas transmission pipelines that were used since 1929 and 1940. The older lines were shut down, and gas was safely removed on April 17, 2025.
MLGW said several streets will be affected, and the pipeline will run near a number of homes and businesses. However, gas service will not be interrupted for customers. Residents will receive notices about road and sidewalk closures, along with additional information, officials said.
