  1. Denmark is on course to have the highest [retirement age](https://go.skimresources.com/?id=55199X1622456&isjs=1&jv=15.7.1&sref=https%3A%2F%2Finews.co.uk%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dstate%2Bpension%2Bage%23gsc.tab%3D0%26gsc.q%3Dstate%2520pension%2520age%26gsc.page%3D1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Furl%3Fclient%3Dinternal-element-cse%26cx%3D011782314020777428663%3Aycznkklrfq5%26q%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Finews.co.uk%2Ftopic%2Fstate-pension-age%26sa%3DU%26ved%3D2ahUKEwiqha7yurmNAxUxQ_EDHaGmFN8QFnoECAQQAQ%26usg%3DAOvVaw0TJccYrELd5oNKwCTB2X2C%26fexp%3D72956999%2C72956998&xs=1&xtz=-60&xuuid=7138a98657fecc39b6db4289acbaba6e&xjsf=other_click__auxclick%20%5B2%5D) in Europe, after passing a new law that will see the state pension age rise to 70 by 2040.

It extends a long-standing policy of linking retirement to life expectancy – a model that has triggered growing debate across Europe.

Under the legislation, anyone born after 31 December 1970 will be affected, with phased increases taking the [retirement](https://inews.co.uk/category/inews-lifestyle/money/pensions-and-retirement?ico=in-line_link) age to 68 by 2030 and 69 by 2035.

But the policy has not been without controversy. Social Democrat Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had previously questioned the fairness of automatic rises, warning that “you can’t just keep saying that people have to work a year longer”.

Here, *The i Paper* explores how Denmark’s bold move could reshape the retirement landscape – and whether the UK might follow suit.

    # What are current plans to raise the state pension age?

The [UK state pension](https://go.skimresources.com/?id=55199X1622456&isjs=1&jv=15.7.1&sref=https%3A%2F%2Finews.co.uk%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dstate%2Bpension%23gsc.tab%3D0%26gsc.q%3Dstate%2520pension%26gsc.page%3D1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Furl%3Fclient%3Dinternal-element-cse%26cx%3D011782314020777428663%3Aycznkklrfq5%26q%3Dhttps%3A%2F%2Finews.co.uk%2Ftopic%2Fstate-pension%26sa%3DU%26ved%3D2ahUKEwja2Y2Ru7mNAxU4AfsDHVLTLqkQFnoECAQQAQ%26usg%3DAOvVaw13KiI0LsEQA0UhrcVUXtdB%26fexp%3D72956999%2C72956998&xs=1&xtz=-60&xuuid=f45751786d8b6ee0e4abf487b3c17dbd&xjsf=other_click__auxclick%20%5B2%5D) age is currently 66 for both men and women.

Between 2026 and 2028, it is scheduled to increase gradually to 67, affecting those born on or after 6 April 1960.

It is then set to rise to 68 between 2044 and 2046, affecting those born on or after 5 April 1977.

    # Could the state pension age go even higher?

Speculation around raising the state pension age usually centres on whether the planned increase to 68 will be brought forward.

Jason Hollands, managing director of wealth management firm Evelyn Partners, said that the earliest this could happen was by 2035, given governments generally commit to giving 10 years’ notice of changes.

“It seems improbable anything will be announced in the near future,” he added.

  2. If we keep living longer, I fully expect to just not have a state pension to rely on.

  3. “Death” is the overall aim. That way they don’t have to pay out

  4. Why not taper the pension age based on when you start working?

Keep it to 35 years of contributions to get a full state pension but have retirement at 70 or after you’ve paid 45 years.

Someone starting work at 16 could potentially retire at 61 somebody not starting until 21 wouldn’t be eligible until 66.

The people who could go earlier would be the ones in manual labour jobs that they can’t physically do into their late 60s.

  5. They won’t you to pay but not to get the payout

    Fuck off

  6. A long term pension system is not sustainable with past and present conditions. So the ugly truth is that the growth of the 50-60ies has been used as an excuse to buy political consent for pensions which already in the 70ies was clear were untenable. This is possibly the root of the economic devastation that younger generations are facing as more and more they save on children making the intergenerational pact untenable. Let’s face it. Old farts are ready to burn down the house to not give up on robbed pensions. Young desperation will be more and more visible. And this will be the topic destroying Europe society.

  7. Only because we have so many older people now, living far past the ages that the system allows for.

Its a big ponzi scheme as “they’ve paid their whole lives” yet used up much more than they paid in.

Now there’s too many of them and not enough younger people on higher salaries to pay it back in for them.

Can’t wait to visit the grave of the current boomers when im their age, to tell their headstones that I paid in all my life yet there’s no state pension because the country couldn’t afford it

  8. I’ll have you bigots know that the poor migrants coming off boats need that money. They come from far worse conditions and surely working a few years longer isn’t S bad as these poor fighting age men?

  9. 70 is crazy many many careers you simply cannot do at that age.

I’m not expecting there to be one when I retire.

  10. Heaven forbid that the pension age doesn’t keep going up, thus allowing people to leave the work force and allow people to move up the ranks and create space for new people.

  11. It’s all well and good to increase the pension age if as they say its not affordable, but what are people who are too old to work but too young to retire supposed to do? Presumably they go on the sick instead?

  12. When the UK state pension was introduced, life expectancy was in the mid sixties. Today life expectancy is about 81. 15 extra years of pension payments. There are also additional health care costs and other benefits, such as the bus pass.

At the same time the ratio of working population to the economically inactive has decreased. Today there are about 30 million workers supporting 11 million pensioners. And there are children, the unemployed, students and others unable to work.

It is currently popular to blame immigration for all our problems. Retired people are the real problem.

  13. Wasn’t the idea if mass migration was to help the pensions schemes and such?

  14. I’m 42 and I’m fully expecting never to get one. Also as tree surgeon. I’m not sure I’ll be working till that age. Maybe need a plan b job

  15. By the age of 65 i will have been in full time, physical work(building trade) for 49 years. Shouldn’t I be allowed to retire before I’m at a point where my body hasn’t given up. Should be more like the Chinese system for people with physical jobs.

  16. Ultimately, the state pension will be dropped / severely cut back.

We could do it now, while there’s a relatively rich cohort of pensioners that own their own homes, could move/downsize, are more likely to have family to support them etc.

    But we won’t.

We’ll just shaft millennials once again, that have no homes, or money, or families, because some generation has to be the one to lose out, and we can’t have pensioners “suffering”.

  17. I would expect it to reach 70 and also private pensions to increase again over a period of time. This will make the average working career longer and supply extra money to the governments funds.

  18. Pension is a pyramid scheme. Declining birth rates will break it

  19. I said it in the DK threads and I’ll say it here again: a pension age of 70 is cruel, unproductive and very damaging to the society. It should not be allowed to happen, not in this day and age when technology pushed productivity well over 200% and so much is automated.

  20. With AI and automation we should be working less and retiring earlier. Profit over people. The capitalist way.

  21. Well, eventually, they’ll have it so that you work until you drop dead, and even then they’ll throw you on a fire to get heating out of your cremation. Pension age for me will be 68 if it doesn’t change in the next 30yrs, but given the average life expectancy is about 81 hopefully we get to live long to enjoy retirement which I’d be pissed about if i died at 81 after only having 13yrs retirement

  22. Denmark push up pension age.

Denmark the model for low immigration

    Coincidence?

  23. If they can fuck you over they will. Basically because ‘they’ can convince you black is white

  24. At least the Danish pension is liveable, the UK state pension is £900 every 4 weeks

  25. It will creep up a year at a time every 5 years or so until you just won’t be able to retire.

There are a few ways to fix this but people just call you racist among other things but to fix an extreme problem you need stronger rules.

First :- Stop all immigration for any reason immediately. Then remove all illegals. Include those that cannot speak and hold a clear conversation in English for 10 minutes with an examiner and also pass a written test.

If the country went all in on this the free housing, hotels, legal battle bills etc would be stopped within about 3-5 years. If you don’t pay taxes, you don’t live in the UK. Full stop . If any left leaning folks disagree please take your attitudes, sexual habits , states of dress to one of the countries these many migrants have come from and live there. You will not be accepted. Nor will you survive.

Re introduce legal immigration once the above scheme has been made to work and is established. The UK will only accept those that come to the UK to work. No study visas.

You would need to completely disregard all legal arguments and ban all solicitors and legal reps who wish to stand up for these folks. It simply has to be that hard core.

Second :-next up start investigating benefit claims. A common sense approach is required. If a person if disabled there’s a fair chance they can’t work easily. Leave them alone. Look for the scammers and scivers who WON’T work. Hammer them hard.

Third:- More prisons in an easier to manage model and harsh discipline. Education and self improvement is the name of the game. The system requirements for this would need an essay written on it so it’s no good writing it here.

Four:- allow people to be proud of their country and bring back free speech. Sticks and stones etc etc.

  26. The end goal is death. They want you to work until you’re dead.

  27. We will likely follow. As will other European countries to be honest.

The pension scheme in this country is already completely untenable. We’re just marching toward a society that spends most of its money supporting the richest demographic in its history. The only way to square that circle is to raise the age and hope people die at a high enough rate so that the drop in pay outs give us a bit of breathing room. This is not a viable future.

Denmark is only the first to do it because they take such a hard line stance on immigration. No immigrants means no workers, since their birth rate is much like every other European country. No workers means no consumption, or tax base. Which means, no money for the state pension pot. So raise the age so more people die before they can collect, and it means you save a few years of paying out, plus you get to squeeze a few more years of productivity out of your old age demographic.

It’s an uncomfortable reminder that our current economic system is predicated on high amounts of human capital. But because of our inverted population pyramids, that just straight up doesn’t exist any more. The baby boomers are retiring, and the generation that takes their places is *much* smaller. And the generation after them is again, *much smaller.* Gen Alpha is the smallest generation yet. They can’t pick up this slack, it’s impossible, no matter how much AI tooling and robots you give them. This is the sort of shit that causes revolutions.

  28. Pension age is increasing in the UK. It will be 70 in 2040.
