In Ukraine, Russia intensifies strikes with drones and guided bombs • FRANCE 24 English

The Russian army is equipping Soviet era bombs with satellite guidance systems to make these glide bombs. After deploying from an aircraft, they fall at first, then glide toward their target. In this projectile graveyard in Khiv, a guidance system lies on the ground. Ukrainian forces were able to recover its unexloded bomb. This investigator arrives to observe it as an air raid alert goes off. He believes these lethal bombs mainly target civilians. With this GPS, it’s guided like an aircraft. Its altitude and rotations are pre-programmed. It can go up, down, right, and left. On the front line, these soldiers explain how they’re trying to help stop these guided projectiles. In this underground dugout, a young soldier has been sleeping here for 10 days straight. He’s not even 20 years old. My job here is to scan the sky, identify any suspicious objects, drones, and anything else the Russians are using against us. The Ukrainians are now detecting some glide bombs. They sometimes manage to divert them from their targets, but command centers like this one remain in Russian crosshairs. This young commander asks his soldiers to dress in civilian clothes when they leave the site. If the Russians spot the base with their drones, they will bomb it. It’s really dangerous. Honestly, we can’t completely defend against it. All you can do is take shelter. Even then, you’re not protected because the bombs are very powerful. Ukrainian soldiers are now able to jam the GPS systems of glide bombs, but the Russians sometimes send up to 700 of them per week, making it impossible to neutralize them all.

The Russian army is stepping up drone strikes in Ukraine and increasingly using Soviet-era glide bombs equipped with modern guidance systems. In Kharkiv, Ukrainian forces recovered an unexploded bomb, now under investigation. Officials say these weapons often target civilians. Here’s a report from a France 2 team.

  7. Ceasefire and peace now. Drone factories are set up and mass producing drones. Time needed to find solution to counteract new military technologies like drones attacks to avoid more horrible damages and lost of lives.
