Is it a secret why there’s a staff shortage in the hospitality sector?
Objectively, it’s a good thing for these poor people to have an opportunity for a bit of normality, get some routine, earn a bit of money and make the best of an awful situation for them.
But some of the framing and inferences here leave a really sour taste in my mouth- firstly, obviously the unchallenged notion of “staff shortages”.
There’s no mention in the article of how much a job at the Abbeyglen Castle Hotel goes for, but given their “staffing shortage” I’m going to guess it’s just north of “fuck all”. Which I don’t think is acceptable considering 1 night in their smallest room in may costs over 300euro a night.
On top of that, I don’t know what RTÉ’s producers were thinking with some of these shots; four Eastern European women being bundled out of a minivan and marched into work, or the shot of them all scrubbing that opulent room in their modest polyester uniforms…
Or that owner/manager who looks like a Gerald Scarfe caricature of a fatcat capitalist.
“Oh they’ve been a great addition to the business”
Yeah I’ll bet….
“As soon as we heard they were down the road we went down there immediately”
No. Shit.
“oh thank god theres such a disruptive war in europe that forced these people from their homes, it will really help our staff shortages”
The sudden whiff of the gombeen
This is terrible for the average worker. Cheap government subsidised labour for businesses that refused to pay proper wages.
A County Councillor in Donegal owns a hotel, and deliberately went down to Dublin to get a bus full of refugees so they could work in his hotel.
On the one hand, it’s great that he helped them with jobs and accomodation.
On the other, it feels pretty predatory. He’s in charge of their accomodation, bills, etc and charges them for it, so it’s really difficult for them to leave or seek work elsewhere.
Watch now that strawberry crowd in Wexford who made headlines during the early days of Covid will have a similar article in the not-too-distant future.
We’re going to be seeing more and more articles like this in the near future, so before anyone forms any sort of opinion on the matter, the first thing to consider is that the minimum wage in Ukraine is around €0.40 per hour
The picture of the manager. Could you find a more smug-looking cunt?
There are no shortages. They haven’t been paying enough.
This isn’t a good thing, they’re using these people. I’m glad they’ve work, but they’re definitely going to be underpaid.
I do feel the photography was exploitative, but I also think minimum wage is too low. As far as I understand from the article and posts on Facebook, they’ll work 20hrs for minimum wage, and lose most if not all of their welfare payment.
I know most will be grateful to be safe and be happy to work. Those I’ve meet are very eager not to be seen as taking advantage of Irish generosity, but I think some might also feel a bit humiliated, particularly having their photo taken. It’s PR for the hotel but the Ukrainians have been through enough. I think the hotel is also giving the middle finger to the locals “*You wanted €12 a hour you greedy bastards, we’ll just get some vulnerable foreigners in*”
I hope a Union or activist is keeping an eye on them to make sure they’re getting breaks and being paid for all hours.
Hospitality sector has identified a new serf class to take advantage of, great news!
It’s one thing if you cannot find staff in a low-populated rural area, it’s entirely another in a city. Their staffing issues are/were entirely caused by only offering insufficient wages/hours for the work.
The working population hasn’t changed much between 2019 and 2022, But the amount of Hospitality workplaces has decreased, that would normally mean that there aren’t enough jobs for workers, So where does this magical “Staff shortage” come from. Is it not the way staff are treated for the fuck all pay they got?
How are they able to work in Ireland, given that Ukraine isn’t in the EU?
Is it a feelgood article about how hospitality straight up refuses to hire anyone above minimum wage so instead they grab the homeless refugees off the street to fill their ranks?
God forbid I ask for 12€/h so I can afford to eat 7 days a week, they’ll just get some refugees fleeing from war to work instead.
I said it when it was announced, there’s no way the refugees coming in were out of the goodness of the gov’s heart. There was a hospitality industry rep on the radio this week saying there’s 40,000 empty jobs. The gov has said they’ll take in 40,000 refugees by the end of April.
Lot of negativity on this, I happen to know the area very well and although working in Abbeyglen might not be the best the locals are genuinely very nice and mean the best, there is a local shortage of staff and having worked there was always treated well and payed well.
It annoys me that the immediate thought is to the negative without any context of the people or place
at least they are able to get work, but the cynic in me tells me some asshole employers will exploit them
>”It’s no secret that there are recruitment issues in the hospitality sector. These wonderful people have made it easy for us to prepare for the season ahead and they are making a brilliant contribution to the hotel and the locality,” Mr Hughes said.
In other words, It’s no secret there are recruitment issues in the hospitality sector due to us finding it very difficult to find people willing to work for fuck all, shit hours, preferably part-time so we have the minimum obligation possible and generally just willing to be analy probed in terms of the exploitation they are willing to accept.
Smug prick.
“I went down the town to see if they could ‘help us’ up here in the hotel.”
I dunno, but that reeks of “this is not a job per se, but rather a vocation i.e. the pay is just terrible and the hours are long.” I had that bo@&ix rammed down my throat when I was working in catering, which is why I left. I actually feel sorry for these wonderful ladies.
As much as I’m glad these people are here and able to get work, something reeks a little of “taking advantage.” I know the situation is complicated but this article just feels a bit……doesn’t sit right
“They took our jerbs!”
this is like one of those upllifting news posts that is in fact pretty depressing news
i’m glad for these people making it out of the hell of war and finding solace in ireland but they’re basically filling a scab position (not by any fault of their own) if the staff shortages were initially caused by shit pay and/or conditions
The price of scones in these hotels better drop significantly
Great news another bunch of poor fuckers forced to work for peanuts.
Should we feel good that your exploiting Ukrainians instead of paying people liveable wages.
I’m from that area and this article left me so fucking embarrassed. That “hotel” is a fucking joke. The locals call it the Shabbyglen!
The owners are fucking loons, are related to Ryan Tubridy and would sell their own children for a bit of publicity.
Of course they ran down the road and got some poor traumatised refugees to work long ass hours (sometimes the bar stays open all night), split shifts, no work/life balance all for minimum wage.
Hospitality down this area is king and they just exploit exploit exploit. I hope those women, in time, find something better for themselves.
Jesus, this is a good thing and all you sub-Clare Daly morons taking this as a cue to complain either about capitalism or to defend economic nationalism. Maybe take a day off?
Im shocked, greedy government and employers rubbing their hands together.
So being used for low wage work…
So are the Ukranian refugees immediately allowed to work? Sort of a spit in the face to those in the purgatory of Direct Provision for however many years
I’m so glad the people on here set this for what it is. Exploitation. The job wasn’t good enough for Irish folks so they had to find desperate and ill informed refugees to put to work for shit pay.
There is no such thing as a staff shortage. Its a fair compensation shortage coupled with an awakening of the general public to expect better. Flipping burgers, answering phones and ringing up groceries are all respectable jobs and should all afford you the ability to provide for your family and buy a house. Anything less is unacceptable.
