The Moldovan National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) has designated Energocom a gas supplier with public service obligations for three years. According to the explanation of the decision, the previous supplier, Moldovagaz, majority owned by Russian Gazprom, will no longer be able to ensure public service obligations after July 31 due to non-compliance with the legal requirement to separate supply activities from the transportation of natural gas.
To ensure the continuity of supply to approximately 830,000 households and small businesses, ANRE previously organised a competition to select a new supplier. Only two companies expressed interest, and one was disqualified for not meeting the eligibility criteria. As a result, the procedure was cancelled, and ANRE directly designated a supplier following the legal framework.
Energocom was chosen based on the following criteria:
• Operates in the Moldovan gas market.
• Has one of the highest turnovers in the sector (over seven billion lei/356 million euros in 2024).
• Is functionally and legally separated from any activities unrelated to the trading and supply of natural gas.
• Has the necessary resources to supply the required quantities of natural gas.
As the Agency highlighted, Energocom will operate under regulated conditions, with established, transparent, and non-discriminatory quality parameters. The company will also ensure last resort supply for consumers who lose their supplier for objective reasons.
