GOP senator hits Trump tax bill, says there are ‘enough’ Republican votes to ‘stop the process’

  1. Hey r/politics, Nikol from USA TODAY here. Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisconsin, slammed a sweeping bill backed by President Donald Trump that poses major consequences for taxes, Medicaid, food stamps and more – and warned there are enough GOP senators ready to block it.

    The bill passed in the House by just one vote on May 22. Now, several Republican senators are sounding the alarm over the legislation’s price tag. It’s expected to add around $3.3 trillion to the nation’s deficit over the next 10 years and swell the federal government’s debt.

    Johnson predicted in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” that the number of Senate dissenters may be enough to tank the proposal.

    “I think we have enough to stop the process until the president gets serious about the spending reduction and reducing the deficit,” Johnson said May 25.

    This farce is just a choreographed and scripted charade performed for the so-called sake of the people to lead and paralyze just enough to think a “normal” process is underway and the result is just, you know, the consequences of an election. MAGA has its marching orders, they know what to say and how to play, and they’re looking to make off with our government and lock the rest of us out of it before we can snap, react, and stop it.

    No. No there are not. They can lose 3 votes, and they will. Collins, because she’ll be “very concerned” but only vote no if there are still enough votes for it to pass.

    Murkowski because she’s the rookie version of Collins

    And McConnell because he just doesn’t give a fuck anymore.

    Johnson, like Josh Hawley who is also making noise about being against it, will bend right over the second Trump tells him to and vote for it.

    This entire thing is performative nonsense and I question the intelligence of anyone getting their hopes up that this might not pass.

  34. The Senate Parliamentarian and the Senate’s Byrd rule is the only thing standing in the way of Republicans from skirting the normal process and passing the tax bill under reconciliation.

    What is scary is that Senate Majority Republicans have already voted once this Congress to overturn the Senate Parliamentarian on whether a bill could pass using the reconciliation process (essentially vote to allow cheating of the Senate rules).

  35. Hope they stop it. Was just thinking about how many times trump could’ve have been stopped in the past and wasn’t. Also just thinking about how trump isn’t going after Merrick Garland like he is everyone else.
