What a relief. Ideologically I can’t help but feel the House of Lords is an anachronism.
But if they keep on saving us, I’ll ignore it.
WTF is wrong with the Tories?
Please, is there a “model, mission statement, or platform of the Tories someone could link me to.
Thanks in advance.

Good, I’ve worked polling stations for years and never had an issue, if voters are going to have to provide ID it will cause delays, they’ll need more staff at the station, people could become aggressive if refused a vote as no ID.
No thanks
Once again the lord’s stops the Tories. How fucked is it that the ultimate symbol of privilege is the only thing keeping these fucks in check?

I don’t understand the reluctance for a national ID card system. We have an NHS, NI, passport, driving license…why not issue every citizen with a single number?
Given it was a manifesto commitment in 2019, the government will simply reverse the changes and send it back to the Lords.
The Salisbury convention means it will pass as the government intends.
Sometimes I wish I was terminally ill so I could take this prick with me!
‘Boris has always been opposed to ID cards and now the party is fully with him on this; and what with the Lib Dems on board and Labour’s majority reduced, the result should be tight.’
Announcement on Boris Johnson’s website, June 2005
‘[ID cards are] recipes not just for waste but recipes for tyranny and oppression as well… I urge you all, by your votes at this forthcoming mayoral election, to show your displeasure at such a misconceived scheme and to give the government that has conceived it and the mayor that supports it the kick in the pants they so deserve.’
On the need to defy governments who propose ID cards (London campaign trail), May 2004
‘I will take that card out of my wallet and physically eat it in the presence of whatever emanation of the state has demanded that I produce it. If I am incapable of consuming it whole, I will masticate the card to the point of illegibility.’
Daily Telegraph, November 2004
‘The eternal tension at the heart of conservatism, between the desire for liberty and the desire for order, and, in the case of ID cards, the frail cockade of freedom has been emphatically crushed by the giant descending rump of matronly authority.’
Daily Telegraph, November 2004
Yahoo, thank you, you marvelous bunch of leather faced oxygen stealers. It was the right thing to do and massive fuck you to Johnson.
Good. I don’t even get what the idea was. Like we already need proof of residence don’t we?
Why is this for the benefit of the Union, and why does he believe that he has a mandate to make this decision based on a minority of people voting for his party?
I wonder why they are doing nothing about mail in voter fraud, which is far easier to commit and far more common(although almost negligible) than trying to vote more than once in person?
People should show ID when voting pretty basic stuff unless you are trying to sway an election ofcourse
THANK GOD OMFG. we are turning into fucking America with all these bullshit polices to make it difficult for ordinary people to have a say.
The Lord’s can be a saving grace, an unelected house is vital for scrutiny. – Case in point, a majority hold in the commons, with a government breaking the laws.
However polticicans (surprise) have abused powers and turned the place into a well paid retreat for friends or people pulling political favours (remember cash for lords)
People now (quite rightly so) have a tainted view. We don’t need 765 people earning £305 a day, plus travel expenses waffing down subsidised food and vino for lunch.
Who pays for a Voter ID?
Is it the voter themselves, out of their own pocket?
If so, then that is a Poll Tax.
Do they really want to go down that road again?
The title is inaccurate.
The House of Lords did not kill off proposal for voter ID.
They just expand the list of acceptable identifications to include non-photo documents like birth certificates, bank statements, library cards, council tax demand etc.
Looks like an obvious area for compromise, really. Although we’ll see whether the government are willing to do that.
Time to come round for vaccine passports/digital ID again then?
The House of Lords stopping nonsense like this again is why I am continuing to support it’s existence. Having a House of experts to scrutinise the government without having to worry about running for elections is weirdly more beneficial to democracy than an elected second house.
Johnson’s government are the party that put through many laws only for them to get smashed in lords
I don’t understand especially when your ID isn’t connected to your vote. There are countries that the voting system is on line and connected to your profile and your ID with no problem.
Wow, so people who can’t afford a passport renewal or similar couldn’t of voted if this had of gone through, just another way to exclude the poor from voting. Thank god he failed.
Good.
Personally, I can agree there should be IDs to help prevent fraud, but not just for voting (where in that area there is little fraud), but it should be an ID provided to all for free to ensure everyone has access to it.
That fuck for that.
Now I just wish they’d stop redrawing the constituency map to give themselves more seats.
Don’t let them creep in the nonsense from over here about election fraud and that there might be doubt about ‘real’ citizens or election outcomes.
