Rye bread is the foundation of the Finnish diet and the single most significant source of whole grains in it. According to the nutrition recommendations published in 2024, Finns should continue increasing the amount of whole grains in their diets. As the market leader in the Finnish bakery sector1), Fazer is responding to this need by increasing its production capacity in Lahti and by introducing a new rye bread line. The total investment in the new state-of-the-art production line is approximately EUR 11 million.

The investment strengthens the position of Fazer’s Lahti bakery as the world’s largest rye bakery, being a significant investment in the production of Finnish rye bread and the sustainability of bread production. The investment has received NextGenerationEU funding through the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment of Finland, which Business Finland granted for the electrification of the rye bread line in the form of an energy subsidy.

The new rye bread line runs on green electricity and significantly reduces the carbon dioxide emissions and total energy consumption of the Lahti bakery. In addition, another bakery production line has been replaced with an electric one. The changes will reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of the Lahti bakery by approximately 30% in 2025 and will also have an impact on Fazer Group’s emission reductions.

More than half of Fazer’s bread offering in Finland is wholegrain bread

The new production line, which was commissioned in April, produces up to 25,000 Reissumies rye bread per hour. With the new line, the production capacity of Reissumies will increase significantly.

“We want to expand our offering with attractive and healthy rye products and increase domestic bread production. In Finland, we bake from 100% domestic grain,” says Marko Bergholm, Managing Director of Fazer Bakery Finland.

Fazer’s bread offering in Finland is wholegrain to 57%. The goal is that by 2030, 65% of the bread offering will be wholegrain bread.

“It is important for us to promote a healthy lifestyle and encourage Finns to follow the new nutrition recommendations by making tasty breads with whole grain in order to support meeting the 90-gram recommendation,” Bergholm continues.
