Billionaires and not paying taxes, name a more iconic duo.
Doesn’t come as any surprise to all the very wealthy families in the cabinet.
He was once considered a Tory alternative to the current BJ but that’s not likely now.
Of course she did, what’s the point of maintaining loopholes if your spouse can’t use them?
Jesus wept, its bad enough when its the likes of Viscount Harmsworth but the wife of a the fucking chancellor, thats just not on. How dare he tell us we all need to pay more taxes on our income while he personally benefits from his wife not paying hers.
Interesting read, also several “could” and “may have” qualifiers in there along with “sources say” type statements. The odd thing is the Chancellors wife apparently isn’t a UK resident.
As far as I understand it any taxes on foreign investments and income are paid locally. If the money is brought into the UK it is taxed by the UK.
> For proof to the tax authority, they have to provide evidence about their background, lifestyle and future intentions, such as where they own property or intend to be buried.
>
> Key to non-dom tax status is that an individual must pay UK tax on UK earnings, but need not pay UK tax on foreign income or gains unless they bring that income back to the UK.
There’s a fucking suprise. At least politicians in the past had the decency to hide their perversions and criminality. This shower are all going “the thick cunts voted for us so we can do what we want”.
Sounds about right. Tories are leeches just taking the wealth of this country for themselves. Why would they contribute to taxes/the economy if they don’t have to.

Just another self serving shameful class A badgerlicker,
Stop enabling grim humans who give not a single fugnut, for people of this country, they laugh at stupid we are , and know there will not be a single consequence for themselves.
I want to live in a functioning happy society , life is much better when that is achieved, those who avoid tax, do not care how dysfunctional and desperate the communities they thrive in become.
We need people who do care in positions of power , not those who are there for personal gain.
We’re all complaining about the Tories but ask yourselves why do they keep on winning?
The great mystery of why the treasury isn’t going after the wealthy but is instead squeezing every last penny from the 99% becomes less and less mysterious every day.
I am shocked, no wait. I expected as much. It’s one of the ways rich people horde more wealth.
How about we backdate what they owe then?
Hmrc are always quick to take money with no notice from poor people when an ‘error’ was made. Time rich people had to live by the same rules
~~It may be legal given it is avoidance but how on earth it is seen as acceptable is beyond me.~~
Edit: Having read more informed and better equipped people with an understanding of the arrangement it is not **tax avoidance.** Nevertheless, at a time of such immense hardship it is dispiriting to say the least. Effectively they’re paying £30k a year not to be British and for that income to remain as it is.
You know, I don’t like either of these two kleptoparasites, but I can’t help but feel that this is a concerted campaign or effort of some sort to discredit our diminutive chancellor. What would be the easy target? Naturally, his wife. It’s all very discount-Machiavelli.
Still say we should tax the fuck out of both of them. Let’s see him smirk on telly then.
I’m looking at her and looking at Rishi and I’m having a hard time believing she’s not the dom
Got to a point now where I can just say…And…nothing will happen, wealth buys power and they will get away with it, same with her links to Russia and all the Russian money in the Tory party. Partygate fines of £50, PM mostly being fined and still keeping his job. These people are crooks, corrupt assholes who are untouchable
Opposites attract.
No they are both money hungry, amoral elitist scumbags.
I’m talking about his big long face and her wee squished face.
I don’t care if she’s a dom or a sub – she should be paying taxes.
Disgraceful. She could pay tax & they’d still be rich. We need to vote these asshats out
I sort of understand the legal argument, I don’t agree with it, but surely for the sake of optics, the wife of the chancellor should pay the tax? It’d be about £4 million, which sounds a lot but she’s still left with £8 million from the years’ dividend and of course a massive £700 million fortune.
As much as I like a good headline, shes an Indian Citizen. Being Indian doesn’t allow for dual nationality.
She never took British citizenship
Although she does own Catamaran Ventures UK. She’s not really jumping through any loopholes.
Breaking: millionaire uses tax loophole specifically designed for millionaires
The remittance basis is an outdated rule that needs to be eliminated. As a tax advisor it causes no end of headaches having to do planning around this and my job would be so much easier without it.
It’s an outdated option that serves no functional purpose in this day and age other than to facilitate this kind of avoidance. That, and overseas workday relief. Scrap them both.
Wants to raise the taxes for the poor and middle class but doesn’t want to pay it himself. Filth.
They’re laughing directly in front of our faces.
Each and every one of them.
Not a fan of the guy. Suspect though some entity is drip feeding news in Sunak. All of this could have come out much sooner. Is it competition or not following through on future policies for loopholes for the wealthy?
Where is the income coming from though? A company trading and generating income whilst she is UK resident and then pays her dividend money whilst she’s UK resident.
If she was talking about remitting money that was earned before she became UK resident? Sure, no problem with that but this is income generated whilst resident regardless of whether it was set up pre arrival.
If she moved to the US, Australia or probably most first world countries (can’t speak for them all) then they would want a chunk of this income that she’s generating whilst resident in their country. I don’t see why we still have this rule that allows UK residents to avoid paying UK tax on their income whilst UK resident.
Nothing shocking here. Every UK resident is eligible to the same scheme.
It allows you to not pay UK taxes on foreign income if you don’t bring this income in the UK, but you’ll still pay taxes in the country where you generate the income.
This is tax avoidance. Most normal Indian born UK residents take UK citizenship and then get OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) status. She’s another oligarch.
All fun and games till she forgets to pay her council tax
Indian born, Indian nationality, registered with Indian tax authorities, money earned in India. Why would she pay tax on these earnings to the UK HMRC?
Being married to a minister does not mean the ministerial code applies to her.
Cue some bollock brain media commentary about ‘dishi rishi’ and his charming missus.
Conservative party. More like convict party. Lock them all up.
Vote green!
The real issue here isn’t that Rishi’s wife did something illegal. The issue is that this is legal at all.
The remittance basis of taxation is a joke. How moronic do you have to be as a Government to give tax breaks to wealthy foreigners on the condition they… don’t bring their money to the UK? It should be the complete opposite. Why are we incentivising people not buy goods and services in the UK, not to buy UK shares, and not to invest in UK businesses. It’s absolutely bizarre.
Reform has been long overdue. The scandal here is that when reform is being discussed Rishi Sunak will have a clear conflict of interest given a change in the rules could cost his family millions in tax.
I know this is avoidance and is completely legal.
But you have to question the moral compass of a man who gives a 1% pay rise to nurses in the middle of a pandemic and hoike up tax and NI for the working and middle classes when he knows his wife is playing the system to avoid £Millions in tax.
So is she staying? Pay tax
Are they going? Should he be the chancellor if he is leaving?
Absolutely shocking behaviour.
Edit: I know she is effectively using her Indian Citizenship and it is all legal.
I’m not questioning her (let’s hope India doesn’t get sanctions for supporting Russia eh?) I am questioning him.

It’s also covered on the HMRC site here https://www.gov.uk/tax-foreign-income/non-domiciled-residents
